#104| Can We Talk?

April 14, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

“Ultimately the bond of all companionship, whether in marriage or in friendship, is conversation.”

~Oscar Wilde

I believe longevity in relationships derives from a conversation that never ends.

So, can we talk?

Today’s featured couple, Tom and Alida Sharp, live in Belize. They met in high school when Tom “shoved an Oreo® cookie in her mouth!”

They have been married for almost 33 years.

#43| Simply Inspirational!

February 12, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimageKarlaF12F

I want to pause today from featuring our Swirling Singles to give a birthday shout out to one of the most inspirational women I know:

Happy Birthday, Karla!

Have you ever met someone who, when you’re asked to give your thoughts concerning them, one of the most robust descriptions you can give of them is:

Simply Inspirational!

Karla is warm, witty, and funny, and one of the most brilliant you would ever have the pleasure of meeting. She speaks from a place that is rooted in experience, truth and love – and she gives it straight, no chaser.

Karla is fairly active on interracial dating and marriage blogs and the wisdom and down home common sense in her posts will have you nodding your head in assent.

She’s a retired Navy officer who served her country well, and served – and yet does – as a shining role model for other women to follow.

I can’t say enough about her, and I’m honored and proud to call her Friend.

Karla, Happy Birthday. Thank you for being you, and thank you for selflessly serving as a source of inspiration and encouragement to me and countless others.

Enjoy your special day!

I Found Love In Macedonia!

November 5, 2014 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 3 Comments

Paula and BojanWe won’t go so far as to say it will happen to everyone, but we WILL say that you’re bound to find more than you bargain for – and we mean that in a good way – when you venture out past your own front door.

South Carolina native Paula Cooper Trajkovski (TRY-KOV-SKI)  decided to step out past her front door (the United States) to broaden her horizons.

Busily employed and working on a Master’s Degree, Paula wasn’t expecting to find love – especially not INTERRACIAL love. Instead, she says, “I found it all: I found love, work and fulfillment – in Macedonia!

She met her husband Bojan Trajkovski  (BOY-YUN TRY-KOV-SKI) in 2009 while working as a contractor in Baghdad Iraq.

Bojan is Macedonian (you’re gonna LOVE his accent!).

Paula and Bojan1

The two married in Dubrovnik, Croatia in July 2012.

WedCollage Arm Wrestling

Paula T Pregnant1Paula and Bojan now live in Skopje, Macedonia.

They are expecting a son this December (around the 13th).

WOOT!

Paula and her husband  chatted with The Swirl World Podcast Co-Host Adrienne London Leach and discussed how they met and married.

You can listen to the podcast on Sound Cloud by clicking here.

Paula is currently trying to launch a small online boutique where she hopes to use it within a year after her launch to help women in need.  She has also completed her 14-year duty in the Army Reserves May of 2014.

Paula and Bojan3Here in The Swirl World, we’re all about Black women living and loving well.

Right now, Paula is just soaking it all in.

She never thought that this is the path that life would lead her too, but it’s working out and she is enjoying the ride.

Gotta love it!

In this concluding episode of our ongoing conversation with  JJ and Dani, the dynamic duo each share practical dating tips for White men and Black women who want to Swirl.

Interracial dating and marriage is doable, yet both parties must be willing to face any challenges, and own up to what it means to be in an interracial relationship.

Podcast Episode 026 – A Sneak Peek Into Season 2

September 2, 2014 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

Dani and JJ 1

Here’s a sneak peek into Season 2 of the podcast!

Podcast guest JJ speaks out about the deplorable behavior displayed by some White men in Facebook groups – which is where he met his wife Dani.

If you’re interested in interracial dating and marriage, and you’re not opposed to finding love online or on Facebook, listen with an open mind as JJ and Dani share how they met.

It’s a sweet story, and JJ has some STRONG words for White men who join Facebook groups and act like jerks.

The full interview and so much more – coming up in Season 2!

Entrepreneur & CEO Shun Jackson-Shell

July 2, 2014 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

Shun Jackson-ShellRecently on the podcast I had the pleasure to chat with Shun Jackson-Shell, CEO of ShunJack, a virtual assistance and small business consulting practice. Through ShunJack, she provides a range of services that include administrative business support, website development, social media management, and graphics and designs.

Shun has sterling credentials. She graduated twice from Dallas Baptist University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Masters of Arts in Management.

Currently, Shun is just 5 classes away from completing her MBA at Texas A&M-Commerce. Woot! Woot!

Through her education at Dallas Baptist University and Texas A&M-Commerce, Shun has learned the true meaning of what it takes to serve others. In the future, she plans to use a portion of her company profits to support causes that cater to the families of U.S. veterans and single mothers.

If you’re a Black woman entrepreneur, you’ll find this show particularly interesting. Shun is very transparent about her journey, and speaks candidly about the mental processes she undertook to position herself for success.

Near the end of the podcast, Shun shares an interesting perspective on Black women Swirling, and talks about her experiences with Swirling in The Big D – Dallas, TX.

Words of Wisdom from A Married Girl in a Weird World

January 23, 2013 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 1 Comment

We love, love, LOVE blogger and vlogger Eugenia Berg – aka Married Girl in a Weird World.

Eugenia is happily and interracially married. She and her hubby are expecting Baby Berg later this year!

Today’s Subject: There IS a Difference!

Today, Eugenia discusses the reality of self sabotage in today’s vlog. Psychology Today defines self sabotage as behavior that “creates problems and interferes with long-standing goals.” Eugenia provides examples of this behavior taken from the best source possible – her own life.

According to Eugenia, there is a difference between self-sabotage and vetting. She asks, “Do you understand what it is?” Eugenia has written two other blogs pertaining to self-sabotage and vulnerability in relationships. You can find those blogs here, and here.

STOP SELF SABOTAGE

For a complete mini workshop on the subject of self sabotage, I invite you to read Eugenia’s two blogs and listen to her vlog.

After you read the blogs and listen to the video, feel free to ask Eugenia any questions you like.

In the meantime, listen and learn, people.

Listen, and learn.

Join in the Fray: In what ways have you engaged in self sabotaging behavior?

I’m blogging every day in the month of January in Blogher’s NaBloPoMo Challenge. Thanks for reading, and feel free to comment!

Hitting the Reset Button . . . . .

July 3, 2012 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 8 Comments

So on July I started the 31-Day Reset Challenge with Rosetta Thurman, creator of The Happy Black Woman. I’m a Woman, I’m Black, and I’m all about the Happy so I’m excited to do this challenge! According to Thurman’s website, the challenge is designed for “Anyone who wants to manifest a change in their life, design a more fulfilling existence, make room for new possibilities or simply gain more clarity about their path to happiness and success. This challenge will especially be of benefit to you if you’ve felt stuck or in a rut during the last year.”

Needless to say, 2011 didn’t rank as one of my Top Ten best years because I was definitely stuck. Sometimes, whether you like it or not, life decides to smack you all upside the head (I believe the politically correct term is “blind side.” Same difference – and definitely the same effect. I’m just saying.).

The event that blindsided me left me stuck, yet I’m happy to say that I’ve recovered and I’m no longer reeling and rocking. Now, instead of being in a rut as a result of being blindsided by Life, I’m agreeing with the assertion that Life Goes On. I’m on a mission to keep it moving and this 31-Day Reset is just the ticket to propel me forward.

Day 1 of the challenge required us to pick a journal to write in, decide on a mantra,  and select a personal theme song. Because I’m now navigating some very pivotal areas of my life (more on that in later posts), my mantra for the 31-Day Reset is this:

“I am not afraid. I was born to do this!”

~Joan of Arc

My personal “theme song” is “I’m Every Woman” by the imitable Chaka Kahn. This song has run in the background of my head from the first time I heard it. It’s so much of part of me that when I find myself in difficult situations, I often say to myself, “I’m every woman; it’s all in me” to give myself an extra boost of courage.

This reset could not have come at a better time, because I’m afforded some much-needed down time as I wait for my dissertation proposal to undergo review. Each day I’ll try to post some tidbit from the 31-Day Reset Challenge. If you’re interested in jumping in on the fun, sign up here while there’s still time to take the challenge for free.

Want to do the 31-Day Reset Challenge vicariously through me? Then stay tuned for updates! Follow me on Twitter on @ASwirlGirl or on Facebook at The Swirl World.

Join in the fray: What areas of your life need a “reset?” What practical steps are you taking to “reset” your life?
