A True Renaissance Woman – Tobi-Velicia Johnson

May 26, 2018 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

Contrary to popular belief, Black women are NOT a monolith. We pursue interests as diverse as our skin tones and hair textures!

In this podcast episode, podcast Co-host Adrienne London Leach chats with Tobi-Velicia Johnson. A Chicago native, Tobi is a Francophile who speaks fluent French, loves and practices ballet, and takes classes on Judaism.

A True Renaissance Woman

Tobi says,

“I’m a 52-year-old Francophile who loves Paris, ballet, and fashion!  I take ballet classes for fun and exercise; I enjoy attending ballet performances, Shakespeare plays and the opera.

I travel to Paris as much as I can–my next trip to Paris is coming up in September, so currently I am actively refreshing my French-speaking skills.”

To us, Tobi personifies the diversity of accomplished Black women. We’re every woman – it’s all in us.

And as we love to say to Black women here in The Swirl World, “You are beautiful, You are powerful, You are EVERYTHING!”

Visual Inspiration

Tobi is an inspiration. She shared some of her photos with us documenting her travels, interest in Judaism, and love for ballet. Enjoy!

Live Your Life By Design – Not By Default!

March 31, 2018 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 1 Comment

Say what? Is life something you can design?

According to our podcast guest, “life is something you either live by design, or by default.”

Well, we certainly don’t believe anyone wants to live their life by simply going through the motions. Who wants to function on autopilot?

Not only do we want to live in the moment, we want to be an active participant in our own lives.

Our podcast guest shows us how.

Design – or Default?

In this episode, Podcast Co-Host Adrienne London Leach chats with bestselling author, speaker, lifestyle and digital strategist Nancy Gathecha.

Nancy is a Kenyan based in Bonn, Germany. When she isn’t traveling, reading or binge-watching Netflix, she helps visionary women design a life of purpose, passion, and profits, so they can enjoy the success they desire.
As a lifestyle designer, Nancy helps her clients live their lives by design – not by default.

Celebrating Loving Day 2017 with Williesha Morris!

June 1, 2017 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

Countdown to the 50th Anniversary of Loving v Virginia!

Our friend Williesha Morris is no stranger to Loving Day. Held each year on June 12, the observance commemorates the landmark Supreme Court decision in Loving v the State of Virginia.

In this iconic case, Richard Loving and Mildred Jeter Loving won the right to remain married. Their love and commitment to one another helped pave the way for IR couples across the United States.

Celebrate with Williesha and Jason

For the past four years, interracially married couple Williesha and Jason have hosted a Loving Day celebration in Birmingham, AL.

Alabama was the last state to remove the IR marriage ban from their law books. Lawmakers didn’t remove it until the year 2000!

Happily for us, 2017 marks the 50th year celebration of the successful outcome of the Loving case.

In today’s podcast episode, Williesha provides details about her now-5th year sponsoring a Birmingham Loving Day celebration.

You don’t want to miss this – Williesha’s celebration features a Skype Q & A with a special celebrity guest!
