A True Renaissance Woman – Tobi-Velicia Johnson

May 26, 2018 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

Contrary to popular belief, Black women are NOT a monolith. We pursue interests as diverse as our skin tones and hair textures!

In this podcast episode, podcast Co-host Adrienne London Leach chats with Tobi-Velicia Johnson. A Chicago native, Tobi is a Francophile who speaks fluent French, loves and practices ballet, and takes classes on Judaism.

A True Renaissance Woman

Tobi says,

“I’m a 52-year-old Francophile who loves Paris, ballet, and fashion!  I take ballet classes for fun and exercise; I enjoy attending ballet performances, Shakespeare plays and the opera.

I travel to Paris as much as I can–my next trip to Paris is coming up in September, so currently I am actively refreshing my French-speaking skills.”

To us, Tobi personifies the diversity of accomplished Black women. We’re every woman – it’s all in us.

And as we love to say to Black women here in The Swirl World, “You are beautiful, You are powerful, You are EVERYTHING!”

Visual Inspiration

Tobi is an inspiration. She shared some of her photos with us documenting her travels, interest in Judaism, and love for ballet. Enjoy!

A Word for the Year? The Swirl Analyst Shares Hers

January 18, 2018 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

What’s the word? Tell me . . . have you heard?

~Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson

Word Up!

In The Swirl World, 2017 was a year marked by leaps and bounds – and ups and downs. Par for the course for just about everyone, right?

Adrienne and I are nothing if not resilient, resolute, and resolved.

Hopefully, you’re like us: you learn from your mistakes and emerge even stronger than before.

We’ve Got A New Attitude

(Actually, we’ve had it all along. We’re just more determined than ever to follow the path we’ve charted for The Swirl World and the members of #SwirlNation).

What’s the Word?

Our word to you is this: We’re resolved to celebrate and elevate Black women; mind, body, soul and spirit.

We plan to move full force into making TSW blog and Facebook page your go to destination for posts, stories and photos celebrating and elevating Black women.

We’ve only just begun. Stay tuned for content that speaks to your soul and inspires your spirit.

So, What’s Your Word?

Many people start each New Year with a “word” they plan to use as their theme for the year. Some are action words, others are mindset words, etc.

Today, Adrienne Leach, aka “The Swirl Analyst,” shares a powerful word for 2018.

Check out her video (she has 2-3 more in this series).
