Celebrating Loving Day 2017 with Williesha Morris!

June 1, 2017 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

Countdown to the 50th Anniversary of Loving v Virginia!

Our friend Williesha Morris is no stranger to Loving Day. Held each year on June 12, the observance commemorates the landmark Supreme Court decision in Loving v the State of Virginia.

In this iconic case, Richard Loving and Mildred Jeter Loving won the right to remain married. Their love and commitment to one another helped pave the way for IR couples across the United States.

Celebrate with Williesha and Jason

For the past four years, interracially married couple Williesha and Jason have hosted a Loving Day celebration in Birmingham, AL.

Alabama was the last state to remove the IR marriage ban from their law books. Lawmakers didn’t remove it until the year 2000!

Happily for us, 2017 marks the 50th year celebration of the successful outcome of the Loving case.

In today’s podcast episode, Williesha provides details about her now-5th year sponsoring a Birmingham Loving Day celebration.

You don’t want to miss this – Williesha’s celebration features a Skype Q & A with a special celebrity guest!

So, Are You A Desperado for Love?

May 22, 2017 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

Desperado is defined in the Oxford online dictionary as a desperate or reckless person, especially a criminal.

Discussing the origin of the word, we learn “Both desperate and desperado originally denoted a person in despair or in a desperate situation, hence someone made reckless by despair.”

We normally associate this word with someone who is a criminal, but think about it:

A desperado is “someone made reckless by despair.”

A Desperado For Love?

So, do you know someone who is a desperado for love? Is that person you?

In this podcast, podcast Co-Host Michelle Matthews-Calloway, PhD discusses ways being a desperado can sabotage your dating and relationship life.

Give it a listen, and let Michelle know what you think. Email her at aswirlgirl@theswirlworld.com.

If you cannot see the podcast players, click here or here.

A desperado is “someone made reckless by despair.” Stay cool, calm and collected - don't be a desperado for love!

Podcast Episode 017b: You Know YOU’RE Cray-Cray When . . . . Part 2 (Special Guest: Eugenia Berg)

July 26, 2014 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 1 Comment

Eugenia Berg 3Hopefully by now you’ve listened to Part 1 of “You Know YOU’RE Cray-Cray When . . . . “ featuring our special guest and beloved friends,  blogger and vlogger Mrs. Eugenia Berg of the blog/vlog “Married Girl In A Weird World.”

In between the laughter and hilarity, Eugenia shared some truths and great vetting pointers – all of which she is known for. Check out her vlogs on vetting by clicking here and here.

In this episode, Adrienne, Eugenia and me each share our take (and Eugenia shares some experiences) on what constitutes “Cray-Cray” in dating – crazy habits and “first date” shenanigans that kill a relationship before it even begins. Texting, stalking, random behavior – you name it!

Our girl Eugenia is expecting TWINS and has only one more month to go, so she’s on hiatus.  Please send lots of love and prayers her way!

We hope to have her back on the show at some point in the future.

Until then, you would do well to go check out Eugenia’s blog and give the podcast a listen!

The Reconnection

November 27, 2012 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

I’m not going to say the technical difficulty I’ve experienced for the past few days was this serious, but to have your phone and your lap top going on strike at the same time can leave a girl feeling a bit . . . well . . . out of touch.

I have to admit that once I decided to just roll with it, I did enjoy my little break from technology.

Plugged back in now . . . . .

Whew.

I Am Going to Have To . . . .

November 16, 2012 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

. . . . Catch up on this blog tomorrow.

I spent a majority of the day without internet access and now I’m even more behind schedule than I was when I woke up this morning.

Tomorrow my day starts at 5:30 a.m. and I’ll have you know this Night Owl was already in bed . . . only to bolt upright with the realization that I hadn’t made today’s NaBloPoMo post.

I’m going to catch up, lest this be my fate:

The Secret I Can Finally Tell You

November 6, 2012 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 6 Comments

Me (whispering):

Pssst! Hey you! Come here . . . . closer . . . . closer.

I don’t know about you, but I for one am glad that November 6, 2012 is finally here.

Thankfully, Election Day voting will be in full swing by the time you receive notification of this post. Because the election is now underway and whatever will be, will be, I can finally tell you my secret.

My typing fingers – the fingers that have been itching to reach out and respond to all the hateful, bigoted, inane, stupid, inflammatory, and idiotic Facebook posts and Tweets I’ve had the unfortunate experience of seeing in my feeds – the fingers that want to come back with retorts and matching jabs – those fingers have been tied for about the past two months.

Oh, I admit that every once in a while, I slipped up and wasn’t able to resist responding to something here and there. (A Huffington Post thread exchange comes to mind . . . .as well as a Facebook discussion with an old friend regarding “legitimate rape” . . . . ~Le sigh).

Yet, for the most part, I have forced my fingers to back away from engaging in politically themed arguments with people and used all the self-control I could muster to make ASwirlGirl just. shut. up.

Whew.

Now come closer, so I can go ahead and tell you my secret:

The reason why I had to tie my fingers is because reading those comments pretty much led me to the same level of intensity – and results – shown in this video (thanks for the link, Toni_M!).

Watch and learn, people; watch and learn.
