Guest Post: We’ve Come A Long Way

June 12, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 2 Comments

shareasimageWillieshaWedding

One of the things I love about editing a blog promoting interracial relationships is the opportunity to read – and share – the stories, perspective and experiences of couples from all over the world.

In honor of Loving Day, I’m sharing and re-blogging this post by my cyber friend and fellow blogger, author and freelance writer Williesha Morris of Nerdy Thirty-Something Life.

Enjoy!

We’ve Come A Long Way

Despite what’s happening in our country now, I’m deeply grateful for how far we’ve come.

I’ve probably mentioned it before, but my parents spent their entire childhood in SC dealing with seemingly innocuous injustices: entering stores from the back, using separate everything and, when walking at night, always being sure to hide as soon as you saw car lights.

They’re not bitter, not once ever openly rejected my white friends and dates and, well, when they and J’s family are together like they were for Christmas I just want to cry. It’s just unbelievably awesome. Like something out of a cheesy Hallmark movie LOL. Sure our families are so very different in many ways other than race, but they still make sure to get comfortable with each other and feel like one family.

I may preach about what happens these days and use polarizing phrases like “white privilege” and “institutional racism” and that the phrase “post-racial society” is almost laughable it’s so false.

But I know how far we’ve come. I’ve studied and appreciated what happened during the Civil Rights movement and love talking about it.

On Gratitude

Even though there’s always awkwardness from the cold stares and general discomfort living here as an interracial couple I’m grateful. Every time I walk into the front of a store or step on a plane and an employee gives me a smile, every time I show affection for my husband in public and, shoot, simply every day I go to bed and snuggle up for the evening I’m grateful.

One of my favorite moments of the year was listening to activist Rep. John Lewis at Dragon Con talk about his motivation for the graphic novel March. He had met my husband while here and my husband thanked him for being an honest politician and what he’d done to make sure we could be married.

Lewis later referred to him as a “white brother” and handed out his cards to everyone. A couple of months later, he sent us signed copies of his books.

When it was time for audience comments, I knew I should thank him for the gifts and to say, to the audience’s enjoyment, that my husband couldn’t attend because he was in the board gaming area. (When I sat back down later, someone next to me whispered, “Your husband is REALLY a geek.”)

But like a few other audience members before and after me, I began to cry. His suffering and sacrifices while growing up, living and fighting for justice in Alabama had a direct effect on my life today.

He and his co-author, congressional aide Andrew Aydin, were signing books afterwards, so I anxiously waited in line to say hi close-up and get Aydin’s autograph. Lewis remembered speaking to my husband which floored me. Considering that meeting many people in and out of his constituency is a regular activity for him (and he’s 74 years young), I was so happy and stunned he remembered.

Aydin said “Aww” when he saw the books and the envelope they were shipped in. It appeared Lewis had packed and addressed the envelope himself. After affirming he met my husband, it was time to move on so I quickly thanked him, shook his hand and pressed my cheek against his. I was beaming the rest of the day and couldn’t wait to get back to the gaming room to let the hubs in on what happened.

Because of leaders like Lewis, we’ve grown dramatically, particularly here in the South compared to my parents’ youth. It’s amazing how much little time has passed but how far we’ve come. You can liken it to the advancement of technology in the last 30 years or so. It’s phenomenal.

To close 2014, I’m choosing to reflect on the greatness we experience on a daily basis and seem to take for granted. I’ll stumble and allow negativity to come back. But I know we’re almost there. Today I choose gratitude.

#163| Oh Happy Loving Day!

June 12, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimageAlidaLovingDay

Today is Loving Day!

I never tire of reading about the wonderfully compelling love story of Mildred Jeter and Richard Loving, who in June of 1958 decided to buck the tide of ignorance and racism and pursue their American dream – which was to spend their lives living and loving each other in holy (and legal) matrimony.

They had to go to Washington, DC for the ceremony but were arrested in their own bedroom in the middle of the night by sheriff’s deputies for the “crime” of interracial marriage.

The Lovings were prosecuted by the state and sentenced to a year in prison for their “crime” but allowed to leave Virginia in exile.

For five years they lived in exile, separated from their families and banished from the home state they loved. The Lovings finally grew tired of the fact that they couldn’t live as a married couple in any state they wanted to live.

They decided to fight back and in June of 1967, nine years to the month they were married, they eventually won the right to live and live in marital bliss anywhere in the United States because of the decision rendered in a landmark Supreme Court case.

These days, turning on the evening news is almost a sure-fire way to remain painfully aware of the fact that racism – whether inherent, overt or covert, real or imagined, never seems to be far from the surface.

I’m grateful for the advances that have been made, yet I’m mindful of the fact that 1967 is merely 48 years ago.

The Loving’s story had a bittersweet ending. In 1975, 17 years after their marriage, Mildred Loving lost her husband Richard in a tragic car accident. Mildred died in 2008 but she never remarried.

In a statement issued on the 4oth anniversary of the historic Supreme Court decision (June 12, 2007 – the year before she died) she declared:

“ . . . not a day goes by that I don’t think of Richard and our love, our right to marry, and how much it meant to me to have that freedom to marry the person precious to me, even if others thought he was the ‘wrong kind of person’ for me to marry.”

I thank God for Richard and Mildred Loving, and for them having a love for one another that transcended the climate and laws of their day.

Richard and Mildred, today we celebrate you – and we celebrate love.

Happy Loving Day!

Today’s featured couple, Tom and Alida Sharp, live in Belize. Alida says they met in high school when Tom “shoved an Oreo® cookie in her mouth!”

They have been married for almost 33 years.

#159| Self-Motivation

June 8, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

ValenciaCampbell2_Motivation

How do you start your day?

Do you begin with prayer or meditation? Read excerpts from an inspirational book?

Do you immediate head to the gym and “get your exercise on?” Drink some coffee, tea or a cold beverage?

Do you have to have breakfast – or are you inclined to skip it?

So, after you get your day started, how do you keep going?

Do you view your upcoming week with dread – or anticipation?

If your goal is to maintain your drive and even build your momentum, self-motivation is imperative.

Motivation is what gets you started – Habit is what keeps you going.

Keep going!

Joyll’s Movie Review: Entourage (2015)

June 8, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

Entourage movie Facebook cover

Let me start off by saying this review of Entourage (2015) is going to be rather short.

And for good reason!

#WhatWorks:

If you are NOT in any way familiar with the Entourage television series that this film hails from, thankfully even never having seen the show you are caught up to speed about the premise’s roots, who the players are and how they got here. Ari Gold, Vincent, E, Turtle, and Drama: Remember their names, because as crazy as they sound you will see them again.

This film is FUN. Plain and simple.

Between the interesting yet somewhat pedantic origins of the primary crew, to seeing all the beautiful people, fantastic scenery, and gorgeous luxury cars everywhere, to the many over the top moments that are a standard in the Entourage franchise, IT’S FUN.

The cameos of so many of Hollywood’s finest young and not so young, to the hilarious but at times awkward connection of the Father and son duo McCreadies played by Billy Bob Thornton and an interesting re-introduction of Hailey Joel Osment, it’s absolutely positively a BLAST.

This is the sort of film where there isn’t much to analyse (ok, maybe the accession and the hard crash heard round the world in Ari’s case) or find something that you connect to.

(Mind you there are those moments; you’re just not necessarily required to find meaning in them in order to enjoy the film). It’s SUMMER here in the U.S. and this is a summer film so going into the theatre with that type of expectations means no pressure on ANYONE.

#WhatDoesNotWork:

You cannot go into a film like this expecting some profound epiphany because it just isn’t going to happen. The beginning act is a little slow at times and a cacophony at other times. But there’s a method to the madness that makes it bearable.

For some reason I sort of feel like they thought it would be a good idea so put all the sex scenes from the entire run of the show into ONE film! At first it’s laughable, than it gets annoying. BUT, then again that is in line with how the original series flows so it’s not a break from the norm and not unexpected!

If you find yourself wanting to enjoy a film where you literally don’t have to think it through, this movie is an absolute bull’s-eye! And as was the case with Entourage the successful series, there’s absolutely NOTHING wrong with that!

Enjoy the moment, live life, and laugh for a few hours! Laughing is indeed a biological need despite what my dahling Athena from Tomorrowland says!

Joyll’s Movie Review: San Andreas (2015)

June 7, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

Dwayne Johnson_SAN ANDREAS_COVER

Themes: resolution, strength, adversity, climate change and the importance of science; ignorance, animosity, redemption, love, forgiveness, dealing with loss, RESILIENCE and FAMILY.

You’ve never seen someone tipping the hat and thought how BAD ARSE that was UNTIL NOW.

Let me start by saying you HAVE TO SEE THIS FILM IN IMAX 3D if it’s available or at least in RPX!!! The sounds, the sensations are absolutely part of the overall experience!!! This is exactly the type of film these theatres were made for!

The peril is meant to have a direct impact on your viewing experience AND IT DOES. You need to feel it in your seat, like you feel it in your heart! (FYI my heart rate hit 138 even the second time we screened this). It NEVER ceases and that’s an integral part of the film. When something this catastrophic occurs, there isn’t a moment’s peace until it is over and either we rise or we fall.

Oh and let me just say I LOVE Ollie, played supremely by Art Parkinson. We are introduced to him quite early in the film and what a brilliant casting! He’s endearing as the voice of reason and highly intelligent for such a young age! JOY! JOY! JOY!

And Hugo Johnstone-Burt, who plays his dashing older brother Ben, is also a welcome addition to this cast and on Hollywood’s radar. These two have extremely bright futures ahead and their sibling chemistry is absolutely palpable and fun to watch!!!

To Carla Gugino: how do you kiss a man who is that gorgeous and not faint?!?! Ok, ok, OK, but honestly, when you pulled your Muma lioness claws out when it came to your daughter, I FELT THAT!!! RORRRRRR!!!! Ok, ok….back to business.

Ok…now. Let’s get in on, shall we?

#WhatWorks

First, let’s talk a bit about THE SCALE of this film.

Oftentimes with disaster flicks like these, we aren’t given an idea of just how not only difficult an undertaking such a large-scale film is, but also we aren’t given the necessary panoramic and wide shots necessary to understand the SHEER SIZE of such a film.We aren’t given the impact the disaster truly has not only on the areas immediately affected, but the outer-lying areas.

San Andreas one ups nearly every other disaster flick because as a viewer, you’re not only educated on HOW the situation is going to deteriorate, but you’re also given a true scope of ALL who will be affected and WHY.

There’s literally an implicit domino effect that not only does not allow for a moment’s peace, but you are given a clear sense of literally how one domino topples the other.

It’s difficult to obtain such Nirvana in a film like this because so many people are jaded that they deem themselves experts on what’s plausible and what’s so-called silly or over the top. In disaster films there often a sense of being provided just the right out or escape if you will at the right time.

Thankfully in San Andreas, you aren’t given what you need to survive and overcome without consequences.

Can I just say; having watched Dwayne Johnson’s growth and evolution into a bona fide action star has been an absolutely wonderful experience! If you found yourself question whether or not he is a bona fide action star, you CERTAINLY have your answer with this wild ride of a film!

He gives you lowest of the low, highest of the high, love, anger, sadness, strength (both internal and external) and everything in between. It’s nice to see such a handsome face have its layers peeled back and there before so much more dynamically wonderful things underneath.

He has a daughter (she’s adorable, FYI) and for that reason alone you could see what his motivations were to not only make this film his best on his best day, but to take on the task of showing the deepest levels of a Father’s love for his children. In other words, The Rock is here to stay, and that is GLORIOUS in and of itself!

Paul Giamatti ladies and gentlemen! In a film where hope can be in extremely short supply, one that can easily overwhelmed with action and mayhem, we have Lawrence (a bull’s-eye with Paul Giamatti), a brilliant scientist who’s been working a long time with his partner Kim to try and figure out a consistent way to predict earthquakes.

What I love about Giamatti in this film is not only does he have the uncanny ability to make the sometimes problematic science in the film WORK, but that he also has the ability to bring a rallying energy into the film that can be difficult for people of science to handle in such a scenario because they KNOW what the worst is that can occur generally.

They’ve envisioned these worse case scenarios in their minds and the outcomes are NEVER pretty. Giamatti’s Lawrence from the beginning on the film is tested on such a scale that few can imagine the strength required to pass such a test.

There is unbelievable sacrifice that Giamatti does a surreal job of showcasing. His heart and his failures (of course they aren’t really but to him they surely feel that way) pull you in and his science and pure determination to change the fate of so many millions of people keep you there.

#WhatDoesNotWork

No world leaders? No message from the POTUS regarding the quakes, the effects they had and will continue to have? No direct acknowledgement of how ill prepared we truly are for such an event?

I feel like there was so much more to this film that ended up on the cutting room floor. What a shame, because there are few things that would normally occur during such a cataclysmic event that would be irrelevant.

We are told about the effects of the quakes on California and the East coast (ripple effects), but with a natural disaster on such a grand scale that potentially could have moved the state of California 47 feet away from the rest of the country on the San Andreas fault line – why on earth would you NOT have an announcement from the POTUS acknowledging not only those whom lost their lives in the disaster, but also thanking those who responded to the call for rescue and recovery?

Why not allow the POTUS to acknowledge the strength of the people affected and the sense of community and empathy that these disasters bring about? These things tend to galvanise us in a way that we just don’t seem to move about at any other time.

This isn’t really a criticism so much as a note about a missed opportunity. I think that would have served not only to properly close out the film, along with creating a true sense of what if that should have been on the minds of every viewed as they were leaving the theatre.

Throughout San Andreas there is a sense of NEVER GIVING up.

From the scientists whom are trying (through their hard work) to give us prior warning to us all, to the people within these disasters attempting not only to survive but to reach out to others who need our help and guidance, to the first responders who lay their lives on the line nearly every day, often for people they don’t even know.

I believe the exceptional job is does in conveying this story’s message from the pointe of view of all these people, is something so rare, that it should be studied, revered, celebrated, and most importantly ENJOYED.

Yes our enjoyment may be tenuous at times if only because we realise the true implications of what we are seeing and find ourselves pondering the realities of so many what ifs in so little time.

Spellbinding, Mesmerizing, Life Changing, History Making, MAGIC. FILM. And YES, #SheCritiquesIt!
