Don’t Mess With Texas – Unless You’re Swirling!

August 14, 2016 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

Don't Mess With Texas

Michelle Culp, our Swirling Single of the Week hails from the great state of Texas.

She’s new to Swirling and excited about her decision to expand her dating and marriage options.

Meet Texas Beauty Michelle Culp

Greetings Swirlers!

Don't Mess With TexasMy name is Michelle. I am a 48-year-old single parent to an AMAZING 23-year-old young man (always my baby).

I have been a public educator in the state of Texas for 16 years as well as an assistant administrator in a private facility. In both cases, I served individuals who face developmental, physical, emotional and behavioral challenges. I also mentor young women.

I’m the baby girl of my family. I am number 6 of 7 children. My parents were married for 62 years so my family is ginormous and I love celebrating life with them!

I grew up in a loving and religious home. I am God-fearing and God-loving. I’m also a PK (pastor’s kid) but I’m the good kind?.

My father is a retired United States Air Force veteran with over 20 years of service. My mother died last July. Everything I learned about love and about being a friend to man, I learned by her hand.

I am passionate and compassionate. Full disclosure: I have always put others first. I am now finally learning to make myself a priority.

Simple Pleasures Are The Best

I love simple pleasures and quiet moments. I love cooking and I cook exceptionally well (I get it from my Momma). However, I don’t cook as often because I am trying to eat healthier and workout.

I enjoy spending time with loved ones, reading, listening to music, attending live performances, and attending sporting events.

While I am still defining what I need and what I want in a relationship, I do know that I want the man for whom my soul longs. I want the man who guards my heart as though it were his own. I want the man who is intelligent, loving and kind with an awesome sense of humor.

Don't Mess With TexasI’m so excited to begin my Swirling journey. Here’s to new beginnings and new opportunities!

Fireman & Family Man – Our Swirling Single of the Week!

July 25, 2016 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

Family Man

Last week we announced we were bringing back our Swirling Single of Week.

We’re proud of the fact that two of our alums met the men of their dreams (one of them was snagged by our own Patrick Browne, a transplant from Ireland).

Whelp, we’re equal opportunity Swirlers here in The Swirl World, and as a result we’ve decided to put a twist on this segment: we are now going to feature men as well.

(They swirl too, you know!)

Fancy A Fireman?

It’s a well-known fact that many women love a man in uniform, and this week’s Swirler has proudly worn not one, but two uniforms.

Meet David Bowling, a member of our private Facebook group and our Swirling Single of the Week!

David says,

Family Man“Hello everyone my name is David. I’m 37, 38 in September. I’m a God-fearing single father of three. I have a set of 12-year-old twins and a 4-year-old son. I currently live in Maryland.

I’m a United States Navy veteran and current Lieutenant in the fire department for 12 years.

I’m the oldest of 5 siblings. I lost my father at the age of 5 during a tragic fishing accident. My mother is still alive and groomed me into the man I am today.

I’ve played high school and college basketball. I love football (Baltimore Ravens) Lol!

I enjoy fishing, boating, camping, amusement parks; just about every sport and love to eat. I love to cook and workout.

A Family Man

I’m a family man. I volunteer a lot of my time to nonprofit organizations and believe in giving back, whether it’s the military or homeless shelters.

I’m laid back and loving with a huge heart. I look forward to getting to know everyone.

Again, thank you for accepting me into the family. Swirl on!”

Get In On The Fun – Join Us For Vetting 101!

April 7, 2016 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

#Vetting101 Vetting Series

So, the “April’s Fools” post was extremely popular.

Our meme advised a truth from Joey Adams: “Never let a fool kiss you – or a kiss fool you!”

I thought about the quote and realized there are only a couple of ways we can be assured of not kissing a fool: either we don’t kiss at all, or we vet.

Vet – That’s It!

Thus was born the series I’m doing in the month of April entitled, “Vetting 101.”

So what’s vetting, you ask?

Vetting means “to appraise, verify or check for accuracy, authenticity or validity.”

Possessing and exercising good vetting skills is essential for experiencing dating success.

Want to be kissed by a fool? Don’t vet.

Want to kiss a fool? Don’t vet.

Needless to say, the members of Swirl Nation are not about that foolish life, so if we don’t know how to vet properly, we will learn.

We will learn – and we will apply what we learn!

Join Me For Vetting 101

So consider this your open invitation to join me every weekday during the month of April, when I hop on Facebook Live and on Periscope to share what I trust will be useful information on how to vet properly.

Here’s the Facebook Live video from Day 3:

To join me on Facebook Live, click here. To join me on Periscope, click here.

To listen to the podcast episode entitled “Internet Love” featuring The Romance Arsonist Gynger Fyer and her beau, M, click here.

Already married, engaged or otherwise boo-ed up? Then share this post with that family member, friend or co-worker who’s single!

Guest Post: I Dream Of Traveling

October 8, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

I Had A Dream

For as long as I can remember I’ve also wanted to know what the world looked like outside my Chicago neighborhood. I recall thumbing through the set of encyclopedias (that I had begged my mother to buy) and collecting old National Geographic magazines that the librarian had trashed. To me these items were priceless. They provided me an escape, a glimpse into places that until then I had only heard mentioned on TV or in school. Places that I wanted to visit and experience.

It never dawned on me that the people who were sharing their stories of traveling to these foreign lands didn’t look like me I was too wrapped in the words they used to describe their experiences to notice. I just wanted to be there, somewhere, anywhere besides where I was.

The Dream Resurfaces . . . And Is Deferred

As the years went by my childhood dream of traveling to see the world never faded but they dropped down on my bucket list until 1997, when my then-husband who was serving in the United States Air Force was assigned to Izmir, Turkey. It was then that the opportunity to fulfill that childhood dream had presented itself. While living in Turkey for three years I traveled to the following countries; Germany, Switzerland, Greece, France, UK and Belgium.

After leaving Turkey and returning to the U.S., I hadn’t completely satisfied my appetite for traveling and living abroad. Once again I had to let they dream slide down the priority list while adjusting to life as a single parent and raising my daughters.

Living The Dream

Flash forward 15 years to 2013 and I’m 40 years old, an empty nester, both daughters in college and living on their own, and I’m climbing the corporate ladder in a career that I love. I had been with my current employer for 11 months when I was promoted to a management position in Athens, Greece. After discussing the opportunity with my daughters I graciously accepted and packed my bags for my new home in Athens, Greece.

And what a beautiful home it was!

Inside Rachel Robinson's Grecian penthouse

I rented a penthouse apartment in a beach community called Porto Rafti, just steps away from the beach and about a 20-minute drive outside of Athens where I worked.

I would sit out on my patio with a glass of wine and take in the most amazing views of the Aegean Sea and breathtaking sunrises.

RachelRobinson_Apt2

I shopped at the local farmers market and grocery store that was just a 10-minute drive from my apartment. Next door to the market was a flower shop owned by an older gentleman. Every time he saw me at the market he would bring me a bouquet of flowers and talk to me in Greek (which I hadn’t yet mastered).

Immersed In Greek Culture

The locals were very welcoming. My neighbors living in the apartment downstairs were both retired educators who spoke 11 languages between the two of them. When the wife (Mina) would hear me come home from work in the evenings, she would call out to me as I was getting off the elevator to let me know that she had cooked dinner and that there was plenty for me.

When they insisted I joined them they made me feel like I was a member of their family. We would talk for hours – and just let me say that the Greeks know how to entertain!

What would start as a quiet dinner for 3 at 8 o’clock would easily turn into a neighborhood gathering by 10 o’clock. I can still hear the joyous conversations with music and laughter in the background.

Interactive History Lessons

Touring the city was more than just taking in the sights, it was an interactive history lesson that I couldn’t get enough of. Events in history that up until then I had only read about, became real, and I found myself standing at the Temple of Olympian Zeus, at Syntagma Square or the temple of Parthenon and so much more.

Greece1_RachelRobinson

I’m Not Done!

I have what I call two tours under my belt and I’m not even close to being done. Living abroad has presented me with so many life experiences that I will never forget. I’ve met some of the kindest people, forged some amazing lifelong friendships and learned some of life’s most valuable lessons.

I recommend stepping outside of your corner of the world – you just might like it!

She will be featured in an upcoming podcast.

This is Rachel’s first travel blog for The Swirl World – stay tuned for more!

#240| This Is How We Do It

August 28, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 7 Comments

shareasimageHowWeDoIt

“How do you guys do it?”

Those of us who date and marry interracially often hear this question.

Many people wonder how individuals of different ethnicities and cultures meet, become attracted to each other, date, marry and have children.

(or some variation of the above)

Some people believe interracial relationships are complicated, dangerous, not worth the time or trouble, undesirable  ____________________.

(fill in the blank)

For those of us who are undeterred by the seeming negatives, this is how we do it:

We simply view interracial relationships as an opportunity to expand our dating and marriage options.

We discover the similarities and common ground – the shared values and worldviews.

As we grow in our mutual discoveries, we include another key component:

We respect each others’ differences.

And in the grand scheme of things, isn’t that what we have to do to build a relationship with anyone?

Yeah, it really is that simple.

I believe there’s a song or a saying entitled “Love Is A Many Splendid Thing.”

There are few sayings I can think of that are truer.

Two people + two hearts = one feeling: Love!

Jeff and Toni, today’s featured couple, met online. They married this year on July 7.

Say it with me: Woot!
