#294| Our Secret Sorrows

Certain posts often go viral on Facebook; making the rounds from individual to individual.

Many of the posts are silly practical jokes. We read, chuckle and blow them off.

However, some of these posts carry serious messages everyone should pay attention to.

This is one such post. (I don’t know who originated the words, so I can’t give them credit):

Many people think that a suicide attempt is a selfish move because the person just does not care about the people left behind. I can tell you that when a person gets to that point, they truly believe that their loved ones will be much better off with them gone. This is mental illness not selfishness. TRUTH: Depression is a terrible disease and seems relentless. A lot of us have been close to that edge, or dealt with family members in a crisis, and some have lost friends and loved ones.

Let’s look out for each other and stop sweeping mental illness under the rug. If I don’t see your name, I’ll understand. May I ask my family and friends wherever you might be, to kindly copy and paste this status for one hour to give a moment of support to all those who have family problems, health struggles, job issues, worries of any kind and just need to know that someone cares. Do it for all of us, for nobody is immune.

Hope to see this on the walls of all my family and friends just for moral support. I know some will!!! I did it for a friend and you can too. You have to copy and paste this one, no sharing. Thank you!

We usually address physical health on Wellness Wednesday, but today we want to focus on mental health.

#293| Take Me Higher

We encounter “rungs” in different places; mainly on our jobs or maybe at school.

But you know what? We can also elect to leverage the mental and emotional rungs we face.

In order to “go higher,” we have to elevate our mindset.

Let’s take our ideas, creativity and critical thinking skills and use them as rungs in life’s “ladders” to soar to new heights of accomplishment.

And even after we have achieved the goals we set and reached certain heights, let’s look at those experiences and say, “Take me higher!”

A Brown Girl In An Anime World

Anime

noun an·i·me \ˈa-nə-ˌmā, ˈä-nē-\ : a style of animation that was created in Japan and that uses colorful images, strong characters, and stories that have a lot of action

Anime is taking the world by storm, and many of us find it fascinating.

I’m especially intrigued by women involved in anime and the involvement of Black women in particular.

Imagine my delight to discover and interview anime artist and comic-book creator Sharean Morishita of S.K.Y. Art & Design and the S-Morishita Studio.

Sharean chats about growing up as an awkward Black girl in a single-parent household, and how she found and makes her mark in the art world.

She also gives us the back story on her husband’s last name!

This weekend I attended the 79th Annual International Rice Festival in Crowley, LA.

Funnel cake is par for the course at a Festival or State Fair – but gator on a stick?

#290| A Bountiful Crop

Take rest; a field that has rested gives a bountiful crop.

Who doesn’t want the ability to do more, give more . . . be more?

We focus so much on productivity (I’m guilty) and output.

I admit I’m all about setting and reaching goals.

Despite my “Type A” personality, I’m finally learning the value of rest.

After I rest, I’m refreshed and energized.

My “tank” is refueled and I’m in a better position to do more.

Here’s to rest – make sure you get some this weekend!

More often than not, a funeral program is where I most often see the words, “A Celebration of Life,” or, “Celebrating the Life of _________________.”

How much more sense does it make to celebrate life during the time you are alive?

The good. The bad. The ugly.

The whatever.
