#180| You’ve Got To Know When To Hold ‘Em

June 29, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimageHarriettaAndRob

Most of us have heard (and even know the lyrics to) the song “The Gambler” recorded by Kenny Rogers. Written by Don Schlitz, the most famous line from the song says,

You’ve got to know when to hold ’em

Know when to fold ’em

Know when to walk away

And know when to run.

I believe these lines speak to just about any meaningful area of life, and relationships in particular.

When a relationship no longer serves us, it’s time to fold ’em. It’s important to be honest, and have the courage to walk away when we know it’s time.

Conversely, we have to know when to know when to hold ’em

No, it doesn’t mean everything in your relationship will go right all the time.

What it does mean is you recognize when a relationship works, it’s worth fighting for and holding on to.

Today’s featured couple, Harrieta and Rob, have been in hold ’em mode for a decade – they just celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary. Woot!

“You can talk with someone for years, every day, and still, it won’t mean as much as what you can have when you sit in front of someone, not saying a word, yet you feel that person with your heart, you feel like you have known the person for forever … connections are made with the heart, not the tongue.”

― C. JoyBell C.

Connect with the ones you love.

#176| What Is Life Without Adventure?

June 25, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimageEDandLANI

It’s Travel Thursday, and I’m excited to present Ed and Lani Renee Priolo, a recently married couple who embody a travel lifestyle.

When speaking of his wife and their life together, Ed says,

“My wife, Lani Renee Priolo, and I got married May 29th down in New Orleans. She’s African-American and Korean, and I’m Italian German. We’ve been together for six years. We’re both from New Jersey but we got out years ago. We try to live in a different place every year or two. Lani is my soul mate and best friend; I couldn’t imagine life without the adventure she brings.”

Ed says he and Lani Renee “try to live in a different place every year or two.”

Imagine that!

A travel lifestyle can be attained in more ways than one. Though many of us don’t have the same level of flexibility frequency in selecting and changing home bases enjoyed by Ed and Lani, we can be inspired by them.

Ed says he can’t “imagine life without the adventure” Lani brings to his life.

And what is life without adventure? Get out there and travel!

#163| Oh Happy Loving Day!

June 12, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimageAlidaLovingDay

Today is Loving Day!

I never tire of reading about the wonderfully compelling love story of Mildred Jeter and Richard Loving, who in June of 1958 decided to buck the tide of ignorance and racism and pursue their American dream – which was to spend their lives living and loving each other in holy (and legal) matrimony.

They had to go to Washington, DC for the ceremony but were arrested in their own bedroom in the middle of the night by sheriff’s deputies for the “crime” of interracial marriage.

The Lovings were prosecuted by the state and sentenced to a year in prison for their “crime” but allowed to leave Virginia in exile.

For five years they lived in exile, separated from their families and banished from the home state they loved. The Lovings finally grew tired of the fact that they couldn’t live as a married couple in any state they wanted to live.

They decided to fight back and in June of 1967, nine years to the month they were married, they eventually won the right to live and live in marital bliss anywhere in the United States because of the decision rendered in a landmark Supreme Court case.

These days, turning on the evening news is almost a sure-fire way to remain painfully aware of the fact that racism – whether inherent, overt or covert, real or imagined, never seems to be far from the surface.

I’m grateful for the advances that have been made, yet I’m mindful of the fact that 1967 is merely 48 years ago.

The Loving’s story had a bittersweet ending. In 1975, 17 years after their marriage, Mildred Loving lost her husband Richard in a tragic car accident. Mildred died in 2008 but she never remarried.

In a statement issued on the 4oth anniversary of the historic Supreme Court decision (June 12, 2007 – the year before she died) she declared:

“ . . . not a day goes by that I don’t think of Richard and our love, our right to marry, and how much it meant to me to have that freedom to marry the person precious to me, even if others thought he was the ‘wrong kind of person’ for me to marry.”

I thank God for Richard and Mildred Loving, and for them having a love for one another that transcended the climate and laws of their day.

Richard and Mildred, today we celebrate you – and we celebrate love.

Happy Loving Day!

Today’s featured couple, Tom and Alida Sharp, live in Belize. Alida says they met in high school when Tom “shoved an Oreo® cookie in her mouth!”

They have been married for almost 33 years.

I’m A White Man – Raising A Black Daughter

June 1, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimageRodSteph

Rod, a White man married to a Black woman and living in Birmingham, AL, was a recent guest on the podcast in an episode entitled “Swirling, Southern Style.”

Today, Rod returns to the show with his wife Stephanie.

Stephanie discusses how much time she took to introduce Rod to her 12-year-old daughter (who has a Black father). She also shares the steps she took to ensure she was making the right relationship moves for her and her daughter.

Rod shares his thoughts on the process, and tells what it’s like to raise a Black daughter.

This powerful, enlightening conversation is a “must listen” for any Black woman with children desiring to date and marry interracially – and for any White man who wants to date and marry a Black woman who has children.
