#225| A Traveling State Of Mind

August 13, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimageBlackWomanInNature

When we began the practice of daily uploading blog posts during 2015, the concept of “Travel Thursdays” was instituted fairly quickly.

Travel Thursdays was inspired by an impromptu conversation I had with Interracial Dating Coach Lorraine Spencer, who at one point in her life packed up and moved to Alaska.

We were conversing prior to her guest appearance on the podcast, and she gave me my entire “Travel Thursday” life when making the declaration, “Black women need to travel!”

(If you want to listen to that episode, click here)

Most of us want to travel, yet for many, budgetary constraints pose a significant obstacle.

If you won’t be able travel abroad – or stateside – this year, don’t despair.

We can all still travel – even if we only travel across town, to a local park or lake.

Remember, “There is sanctuary in being alone with nature.”

If traveling isn’t possible as a state of being, make it a state of mind.

Join in the Fray: What are the best local places in your city you can visit on a day trip?

The Swirl World Team is committed to sharing 365 days of inspiration in 2015. Our goal is to help you stay motivated and inspired by bringing you positive, uplifting images and corresponding thoughts.

We’d love to FEATURE YOU in one of our Inspiration Daily posts! If you’d like to be featured, please send a nice, clear photo to InspirationDaily@TheSwirlWorld.com.

#160| We Feel The Love!

June 9, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimage_FeelTheLove

Today, June 9, is our 1-Year Podcast Anniversary – it’s our “Podaversary!”

Woot! Woot!

Here in The Swirl World, we believe we have one of the most amazing “jobs” on the planet.

We have the privilege of curating and sharing photos of interracial couples from around the globe.

They represent ordinary people who enjoy an extraordinary love – active demonstrations of individuals living their lives on their own terms.

Thankfully, you out there in Swirl Nation feel the love, because our Facebook community is now more than 21,500 strong, our monthly blog visitors have quadrupled and our podcast numbers are stellar.

We also enjoy the daily engagement in our private Facebook group, an interactive community composed of quality, carefully vetted interracial couples and singles that, when it comes to drama, are “not about that life!”

Hardly a day goes by without emails from you expressing how much you enjoy seeing the couples, receiving daily inspiration in your inbox and listening to the podcast episodes.

Thank you – we feel the love!

And you know what?

We bring you podcast episodes, write blogs, post to Facebook and interact in our private Facebook group because we are committed to you, our audience.

You feel the love for us: We feel the love for you.

A Match Made In Sierra Leone And Beijing!

May 13, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

Aida-Yang-2Sierra Leone native Neneh Ada Yang met her husband, renowned Chinese artist Yang Yan of Beijing, when he came to her country specifically looking for a BLACK woman to marry.

Within one week of meeting, they were married!

Yes.

Within. One. Week!

Note: This can happen when both persons:

  • Know themselves
  • Know what they want/don’t want in a mate.

Neneh has been featured in news articles too numerous to count. She was profiled by Lorraine Spencer on the Interracial Marriage and Family website in an article entitled, “China’s Black First Lady.”

Aida-Yang and hubby-1

Lorraine writes, “Neneh and her husband Yan are celebrities in China and of course she is loved in her home of Sierra Leone. Neneh’s foundation provided thousands of Ebola resistant, protective wear for healthcare workers and citizens.

Neneh has become fluent in Chinese since she lives in China. Her husband taught her art and now she has her own exhibitions as does her husband in various countries. Neneh also plays a rare instrument; a guqin, one of only a few in the world who mastered it in China.

She is a philanthropist and most importantly wife and mommy.”

Swirling, Southern Style!

April 6, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimagePodcast067

Here at The Swirl World we receive a number of emails and Facebook in-boxes, and we’re thankful for the positive feedback we receive.

Our emails come from men and women who appreciate our upbeat, positive take on interracial dating and marriage, aka Swirling.

One of our fans, Rod, a White man happily married to a Black woman and living in Birmingham, AL, reached out to us.

He wanted to share his perspective on swirling in Birmingham, AL – a place many of us may not associate in a positive way with interracial relationships.

In this special Men’s Edition Podcast, Rod talked to Adrienne and me about “Swirling, Southern Style,” and shared with us about life and love in Birmingham – a Southern city with a storied civil rights history.

Rod also debunks the myth of the “shy guy” and shares a unique tip on a place non-Black men can go to meet Black women.

Enjoy!

Chatting With CHONILLA – Part 1

March 4, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

Clove-AND-Sherley

Whew . . . !

The upload of Podcast Episode 062 (and the next two upcoming podcast episodes) have been a long time in the making.

Y’all, I’m not even going to tell you when we recorded this podcast with the one, the only, Sherley and Clove aka CHO & NILLA of Montreal, Quebec.

Yep – CHONILLA.

CHONILLA!

Let me just say, Adrienne and I interviewed Shirley and Clove early in our podcast journey (we launched June 9, 2014).

We were such newbies, and thrilled to have these veteran interracial podcasters to come on our show.

Sherley and Clove have been blogging and podcasting  from Canada for years, and we were thoroughly geeked out to have them on our show.

We wound up chatting for almost two hours, and it’s taken me with my anal self this long to get their show edited and up.

*Hangs head in shame*

I know they forgive me, though (thanks, Sherley and Clove!), and we’re happy to finally present our conversation with them.

Shucks, it’s almost time to have them back on!

*Grins*

To listen on Sound Cloud, click here.

CHONILLABe sure to go check out Sherley (@Sherasaurus on Twitter) and Clove (@Clovasaurus on Twitter) on Facebook and Twitter and subscribe to their podcast.

They’re a riot! Woot! Woot!

PS – Our shout-out for this episode goes to Rosetta Thurman of Happy Black Woman. Be sure to look Rosetta up on Facebook, Twitter and on her website, HappyBlackWoman.com. We <3 you, Rosetta!

#61|Positive Networks

March 2, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimage2BlackWomen61M

Sunday evening I had the distinct pleasure of participating in a roundtable discussion composed of Black women podcasters.

We spent an amazing 1.5 hours sharing our opinions on several key questions of interested to women podcasters, as well as some of our best podcasting practices.

We were a group of women sharing and interacting, and building positive networks that should prove solid and long-lasting.

So, as you enter this workweek, who can you call, send a note or email, or invite to lunch?

Who can you ask to mentor you – or whom can you offer to mentor?

With whom can you take active, practical steps toward building a positive network?

Go ahead – pick up the phone, send that email, type a text or put a note in the mail.

Do it now – you’ll be glad you did!
