Interracial Couples & A Slovenian Photographer

June 10, 2016 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

For me, seeing photographs of interracial couples inspires such joy.

Photographs like this one.

A Slovenian Photographer & Interracial Couples

They range from breathtakingly beautiful, to haunting and mystical, to downright quirky and fun.

Regardless of the setting, they feature ordinary people experiencing extraordinary love.

For The Love Of Interracial Couples

That’s where Slovenian-born photographer Matjaz Tancic comes in.

Matjaz TancicMatjaz, or “Matt,” as he is affectionately called, is passionate about photography. In particular, he’s drawn to photographing interracial  couples.

A Slovenian photographer based in Beijing, China, Matt contacted us a few months ago.  He was  in New York City working on some photographic projects.

Matt wrote us and said,

“I am really inspired by your story and the beautiful Swirl community you have created. As a photographer with the eye for everything beautiful, I would be really interested to photograph some mixed raced couples while in NYC. Later on I wish to continue photographing mixed couples also in China and later on in Africa to show the love, beauty and understanding.”

Matt was kind enough to offer free photography sessions to the couples we sent his way.  That’s right – FREE!

He also gave us permission to share the photos on our website and social media.

An internationally known photographer, Matt has been photographing for Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire,  and Fast Company just to name the few.

Woot!

Podcast Interview

Our Adrienne London Leach had the opportunity to chat with Matt about his beautiful country of Slovenia. He also told Adrienne about why he’s so passionate about photographing interracial couples.

Enjoy!

Introducing A New Feature: He Says, She Says!

June 9, 2016 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

Depending how long you’ve been hearing about or reading self-help books of the “relationship” genre, you may or may not be familiar with the iconic NY Times bestseller, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus: A Practical Guide for Improving Communication & Getting What You Want in Your Relationships, by John Gray, PhD.

In his book, “Dr. John Gray provides a practical and proven way for men and women to improve their communication by acknowledging the differences between their needs, desires, and behaviors.”

The short version?

The premise of the book is simple. Men and women are different.

(Duh!)

We Have A New Feature

Yeah, men and women are different. Throw in the added twist of an interracial relationship and well, things can get very interesting.

Today, we take great pleasure in introducing a new feature here on the blog: He Says, She Says!

Enter millennials Angelique Evette Long and Jonathan Gamel. As we progress with this series, we’re going to pose the same question to this couple.

Our purpose is to glean some insight not only into the male and female perspective on the same question, but more important, from the perspective of a Black woman and a White man involved in an interracial relationship.

Meet Angelique and Jonathan!

She Says: Angelique Evette Long

He Says, She SaysMy name is Angelique Evette Long, but I go by the nickname Angel. I’m a 26-year-old with an “old soul.” In other words, I’m a bit old-fashioned.

I was born and raised in a small country town called Belle Mina, Alabama. I’m a mother of 3 amazing children; ages 8, 6, and 3. I’m a full-time college student at Athens State University majoring in Psychology, and where I am an executive officer and co-founder of SGA Online.

My passion is to help people who have a mental illness cope with life.

After I complete undergrad and grad school, I plan on using my Master’s Degree to start my own practice; while also working on my PhD.

I’ve always been a helper; whether it be through giving advice or volunteering. I believe that God placed us on Earth to be a light for others, so with each day my heart is open and willing.

He Says: Jonathan Gamel

He Says, She SaysWell, my name is Jonathan Gamel. I’m 24 years old, and I come from a small home in a small town in Alabama.

Right out of high school I started a job working construction because college just didn’t make sense to me.

After 6 years at that job I decided that I was finally tired of using my body, and I was ready to start using my brain. I came up with the idea for an amazing mobile app that is expected to revolutionize the way event marketing is done.

The name of the app is EventPro. It’s in the early stages at the moment but it is coming along nicely. EventPro is a year in the making and I must say that it hasn’t been easy, but it was absolutely worth the risk.

Now I am here interacting with you guys; thanks to Angel. I really appreciate the opportunity that The Swirl World is affording me.

Most people dream of being able to tell their heartfelt opinions about important lifestyle topics to an audience of captivated listeners or readers, and here we are! I really hope that everyone enjoys reading the articles that will follow.

How They Met

He Says, She Says

Angel says,

“We met via social media; Snapchat to be exact. It had been a year since my previous relationship and I was still a little bitter, so one day I just decided to make a snap saying, “I’m convinced that no man can handle me!”

Jonathan saw my post and private messaged asking, “Is it possible that you create situations where no man can “handle” you?”

His response was so intriguing; I didn’t know whether to feel impressed or insulted!

I became slightly interested, so I messaged him back and we hit it off quite well. This month would make it one year ago since that initial conversation; we’ve been going strong ever since.

Jonathan and I want to reach out to those who may be struggling to find a partner, and/or to interracial couples that may need advice on the everyday issues that mixed relationships face.

It’s not easy being in an interracial relationship, especially when you’re from a place where dating outside of your race is not approved. Because we live in the South, we get the whispers and the rude stares whenever we go out in public.

It used to get to me at first because Jonathan is the first white guy I’ve ever dated, so I wasn’t used to that. Eventually, I told myself, ‘Stop being bothered by anyone who doesn’t approve of your relationship; they contribute nothing to your love life. What’s important is that I love Jonathan and he loves me. That’s all that will ever matter.’

So now when I notice the negative reactions from people, I just smile at them and keep going.

Our reasons for wanting to reach out to the singles looking to date outside of their race is that we understand that for some people, it takes little or no effort to find the mate they are looking for, but for others it isn’t so easy. We want to address these issues, and give advice based on our own personal experiences.

Next Week: Let The Questions Begin!

Stay tuned for the next edition of He Says, She Says, when Angel and Jonathan respond to the question:

Black women get a LOT of flak from seemingly all sides in relation to their dating practices. What are they doing right when it comes to dating?

Join In The Fray: Got a question for Angel and Jonathan?

Send it c/o ASwirlGirl@TheSwirlWorl.com.

See you next week for the inaugural edition of He Says, She Says!

One Way YOU Can Change The World

June 6, 2016 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

You Can Change The World

Do you believe YOU can change the world?

Yes, YOU!

In light of all the negativity inundating us on a daily basis, it’s wonderful to know we can control the degree of its effect.

We’re not hopeless.

We have resources at hand we can use to make a difference in how people and things affect us, and how we affect people.

Seems simple, yet one of those resources is a smile.

That’s right – a smile.

Here’s one way you can change the world: gift someone with your smile.

Go ahead and do it – you just may change their world!

Use your smile to change the world; don’t let the world change your smile.

Loving Day Celebration – And A Podcast First!

May 30, 2016 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

Loving Day 2016

Loving Day is for Swirlers!

If you’re a Swirler – someone who dates/marries interracially – then you’ve probably heard of Loving Day.Richard and Mildred Loving.

Loving Day was created in honor of Mildred Jeter and Richard Loving. In June of 1958, Richard and Mildred decided to buck the tide of ignorance and racism and pursue their American dream.

They simply wanted to spend their lives living and loving each other in holy (and legal) matrimony. They went to Washington, DC for the ceremony but were arrested in their own bedroom in the middle of the night by sheriff’s deputies for the “crime” of interracial marriage.

Right.

The “crime” of interracial marriage.

They fought back and in June of 1967, nine years to the month that they were married, in a landmark Supreme Court case they eventually won the right to live and love in marital bliss anywhere in the United States.

That’s right.

ANYWHERE.

Another Landmark “First”

In Podcast Episode 105, The Swirl World Podcast enjoys another first: A video to accompany the audio!

Former podcast guest and fellow Swirler Williesha Morris shares a slide show commemorating her crowd funding campaign for Loving Day 2016 in Birmingham, Alabama.

We’re honored to partner with Williesha in this worthy campaign and “Loving” cause.

Check out Williesha’s slideshow, and then head on over to her site to contribute to her campaign.

https://theswirlworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Williesha_Loving-Day-Swirl-World-Recording.mp4

Because of Richard and Mildred Loving, we have couples like Williesha and Jason Morris.

Loving Day 2016

We LOVE it! (pun intended)

Angels Wake Me Up

May 29, 2016 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 5 Comments

When Angels Awaken Me

Rated M for Mature.

—

I am sleeping, drifting…floating….somewhere in that insensate where I am not quite asleep and not yet awake. I don’t feel anything…I don’t hear anything…I am suspended….rising….slowly into my senses.

As I float slowly float upward, I am aware of your nearness…you are close to me and I feel secure. In my sleep, I feel your breathing, your body against mine.

You are asleep as well. I don’t know what time it is….I don’t know if it is still dark. It doesn’t matter. I am comfortable, content, drifting ever upwards.

I feel my lightness dissipating. I am aware of my body. I feel my legs, sensations moving upwards as I move slightly closer to your warmth. I have kicked the covers off and I feel the chill of the air on my flesh.

Your breathing changes slightly and our bodies move into the position we rest in….my back against you, my ass curved into you….our legs tangled. As I continue to awaken, I move back into sensations….flickers of light…soft sounds…the faint scent of the love we just made before we fell asleep.

You pull me closer to you as you awaken. My ass presses into your belly and you adjust me slightly so that your breath rustles across my neck. Your arm is resting on me and you cup my breast and kiss my shoulder. I am still floating in the warm cocoon of sleep.

I am not yet aware of your need.

—

You are awake now and your kisses move across my shoulder to my neck. I feel so safe and warm. It is wonderful….maybe I will sleep just a while longer….

I turn my face towards you unconsciously to accept your morning kiss. Your fingers squeeze my nipple and your hand caresses my breast. You are so close to me now, I move to complete the link between our bodies. I breathe slowly as I float into my reverie again. I know you are there, and I feel you but I am unaware of your movements as you rise over me and caress my thighs. They fall open to you without my realizing what I am doing.

You smile, thinking I am awake. I am responding to your touch and you are aroused, not knowing I am still sleeping.

Only part of me is aware of what you are doing. I sigh…and see the lights around me again…soft flashes of pink and yellow lights….moving around me, guiding me up. I sleep as if I am on a cloud…..a warm cloud of gentle breezes and sounds…ever moving me…ever drifting. It is so peaceful!

I smell flowers and sweetness. Gentle hands stroke me, stroke my thighs, up my stomach to my breasts, soft lips move to my neck and around to the side of my face.

Angels are helping me awaken, I think…angels that love me and want to guide me to my senses slowly and tenderly. I smile in my sleep as I enjoy their touch.

Your lips close around my nipple and gently tug it into tautness. I sigh again. The sensations are becoming more and more intense. I feel that pulling in my stomach that signals arousal. I turn until I am flat on my back. The air moves across my breasts and I feel your hand cupping me, squeezing me, your tongue lapping softly and then your teeth pull at my nipple….ever so tenderly.

I love waking up slowly like this.

You move your body over mine, your hands and your mouth move across me causing ripples of feelings to move through me. My skin is heating up…it is difficult to breathe.

I don’t know what is happening, but I am enjoying the way it feels. I moan aloud as the wetness between my legs seeps out of me. You feel it and stroke me until my womanhood is soaked in my own sweetness.

I am ready for you.

—

You slide into me so smoothly, so naturally that I gasp. I feel filled….satisfied to be joined with you. You move inside me, touching places that cause my hips to rise, to move, to make circles. I have to hold on to you and wrap my legs around you.

I feel the tingles as you touch me inside…the little fires that feel so good. They continue to feel even better…and my body is moving faster now, rising, coming into you and suddenly, I am awake.

My eyes are open. I look up into your eyes, smiling as you make love to me.

“Good morning,” you say, your voice so soft and warm.

I cannot speak just yet. I cannot do anything but feel. I move my legs higher and your manhood touches my nub and it sends sparks through my body.

I am going to come.

I feel it moving through my body and my legs begin to shake. The lights come back and the sweet spasms take me even higher than my dreams.

I lay, still shivering, gazing at you.

“I was still asleep,” I say.

You laugh.

“You were responding to me so I thought you were awake and just enjoying the attention.”

“I was enjoying it, but I was still asleep. I woke up just before I came. I didn’t know what you were doing. I thought angels were waking me up.”

You hold me close to you and I realize I was right.

Seize The Moment

With all the turmoil and unrest throughout the world, happiness is something you sometimes have to strive to attain – or maintain.

Whatever you do and no matter what happens, seize the moment.

Make the most of your life. Pursue your dreams, goals and passions.

Don’t waste your precious time and energy hating.

Make full use of the time you have and the opportunities presented to you.

Seize the moment – now – today!

It’s OK To Be Zany – Zany Is Good!

April 18, 2016 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

 Zany Is Good

zany – za-ne

adjective
  1. amusingly unconventional and idiosyncratic.
    “zany humor”

A former coworker and professional associate of mine died recently. Nick was not a close friend but was a good guy and a talented meteorologist.

His life was cut short in a tragic way – I’ll spare the details. But suffice to say there were rivers of tears at his memorial service. Several family members spoke, and you could tell that they were just shattered.

But there was also laughter. A fellow meteorologist and close friend of the deceased delivered a short eulogy, the theme of which that Nick was “the proper amount of zany.”

But what did that mean, exactly?

The Proper Amount Of Zany

As his friend recounted, “Nick and I and Scott (another friend) got into the habit of playing cribbage on Sunday afternoon at a picnic table on the Decatur, Georgia courthouse grounds. All the while, we’d talk about the ups and downs of life.”

“Nick became very passionate about cribbage. One day he told us he’d started a blog on the game, because he’d done some checking and as far as he could tell, none existed. And there just NEEDED to be a cribbage blog.”

The Off-Kilter Approach

That slightly off-kilter approach extended to his professional life as well.

Right after a significant earthquake in Japan, his coworkers were trying to get information from the Japanese meteorological and science agencies. The trouble was, in the very early going, everything on their websites was in Japanese.

Suddenly, said his workmate, an email popped up from Nick. He was supposed to be enjoying a day off, but here he was on the computer at home. (Mind you, this was very early in the morning.)

Unprompted by anyone, he’d translated the bulletins into English and was passing them along. That was how his colleagues learned of his ability to speak several languages.

When I worked with Nick in our radio department, our morning shifts started at 3:30 a.m. The rest of us would stumble in, groggy, attend a meteorologist briefing and then head upstairs. We’d flee into our radio booths and close the doors, starting our day hermit-like while quietly and desperately slugging coffee.

Not Nick. His coffee substitute was 90s alternative rock. You could hear it trickle out of the closed door of his booth.  Suddenly, it would momentarily blast full-volume as he’d open his door, run down the hall to ask if we needed help on a busy morning with answering a forecast question, or just simply grin and say “What’s up?”

Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Swirling

So how does this apply to life, liberty and the pursuit of swirling?

I think we all need to consider incorporating a little more zany into our lives, and I think that done right, it’s a real conversation-starter and people-attractor.

I’m not suggesting anyone take up cribbage, but I think it’s worth exploring some new activity as a way of giving oneself a mental jolt.

Maybe it’s time to take that finger-painting class. Or to decorate your work cubicle with Mardi Gras beads and Star Wars figurines. Or take some bacon-flavored cupcakes across the street to meet that new neighbor you’ve only waved to in passing. The possibilities are endless.

It’s OK To Be Zany

Zany is good. Zany is interesting. And you never know, you might meet someone that’s “half a bubble off plumb” (as my blue-collar friends used to say) in the exact same way you are.
