March 9, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

CHONILLALast week we gave you Part One of “Chatting with CHONILLA,” Sherley Joseph and Clove Roy of Montreal, Quebec, a.k.a. CHO & NILLA.

We’re back with Part Two. In this episode, Sherley speaks very candidly about some reservations she had about her body when she started dating her now-husband Clove.

They also discuss why they don’t ascribe to the “kum ba ya; we all bleed the same” mindset.

They keep it real, they keep it 100 – that’s the CHONILLA way!

If you missed Part One, click here. If you don’t see the podcast player, click here to download Part 2. To listen on the podcast site, click here.

Chatting With CHONILLA – Part 1

March 4, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

Clove-AND-Sherley

Whew . . . !

The upload of Podcast Episode 062 (and the next two upcoming podcast episodes) have been a long time in the making.

Y’all, I’m not even going to tell you when we recorded this podcast with the one, the only, Sherley and Clove aka CHO & NILLA of Montreal, Quebec.

Yep – CHONILLA.

CHONILLA!

Let me just say, Adrienne and I interviewed Shirley and Clove early in our podcast journey (we launched June 9, 2014).

We were such newbies, and thrilled to have these veteran interracial podcasters to come on our show.

Sherley and Clove have been blogging and podcasting  from Canada for years, and we were thoroughly geeked out to have them on our show.

We wound up chatting for almost two hours, and it’s taken me with my anal self this long to get their show edited and up.

*Hangs head in shame*

I know they forgive me, though (thanks, Sherley and Clove!), and we’re happy to finally present our conversation with them.

Shucks, it’s almost time to have them back on!

*Grins*

If you don’t see the podcast player, click here to download Part 1. To listen on the podcast site, click here.

To listen on Sound Cloud, click here.

CHONILLABe sure to go check out Sherley (@Sherasaurus on Twitter) and Clove (@Clovasaurus on Twitter) on Facebook and Twitter and subscribe to their podcast.

They’re a riot! Woot! Woot!

PS – Our shout-out for this episode goes to Rosetta Thurman of Happy Black Woman. Be sure to look Rosetta up on Facebook, Twitter and on her website, HappyBlackWoman.com. We <3 you, Rosetta!

Help! Am I Being Too Sensitive?

January 13, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimage

We often receive questions sent via email to our inboxes on Facebook and our blog email addresses.

Adrienne has taken up the bulk of this part of our work (bless her!). Her usual method has been to respond privately (oftentimes going back and forth, diving deep into responses and even following up with phone calls).

This year, we’re going to start sharing some of the emails we receive, and we’ll respond either here on the blog or via our podcast.

And yes, as women we can be very good at helping each other to figure things out.

Even so, some questions require a man’s take on an issue – and a man’s response.

Enter David Leach.

For some of the questions (and for this one), Adrienne’s husband David is going to give his take and provide his response.

WOOT!

Here’s our first question for 2015:

 Hey.

I’m in my first interracial relationship at 44, he’s 57 and I’m not his first.  It took some time for me to be open to loving him, which I do and we are great together.  There are no non-Black people in my family, never have been. However, I’ve proudly introduced him to them.  My issue is he will not bring me to his family functions.  His father was in town for a week and my “friend” confirmed that if I were white I’d have been invited to meet the dad and mother, who lives here.  He said he didn’t want to disappoint his father. Ouch.

Today, after I told him how much I was hurt the last time, he did it again.  I cried the first time.  I’ve never had anyone treat me like an embarrassment or someone to be ashamed of.  I’m trying to not exaggerate the circumstances, but he’s almost 60.  Yes he says he loves me. And let me also add I’ve been introduced to his brother and cousin and a couple of friends.  Am I being too sensitive?  Or am I reading this in historical accuracy that having a Black woman on the side, yet not out in the open is the situation I am in?

I told him I need a couple of days to think.

I’d appreciate your opinion.

Thank you,

TL

David’s response:

Hi TL,

You are not being too sensitive. Men (and I use that term lightly in this instance) like this make me very angry. I’m approximately the same age as he is and I can’t fathom being afraid of what my parents would think about any decision I made. This man is clearly not in love with you or even interested in a serious, committed relationship. Otherwise, he would be PROUD to introduce you to his parents. In fact, he would want the whole world to know he loves you. The fact that he refuses to take the basic step of introducing you to his parents speaks volumes. Furthermore, he has already demonstrated that your feelings in this matter are unimportant to him.  I can’t imagine being with someone who is ashamed or embarrassed of me simply because of my skin color. You need to seriously ask yourself if you are willing to continue a relationship with someone like this. If he has not grown a spine and a set of balls by age 57, he never will. I personally believe that you can do better than this spineless jellyfish.

TL, you know what they say about a word to the wise . . . . Be sure to send us a follow-up email to let us know what you decided.

If you’d like to share your thoughts or experiences, feel free to leave them in the comments below.

I Found Love In Macedonia!

November 5, 2014 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 3 Comments

Paula and BojanWe won’t go so far as to say it will happen to everyone, but we WILL say that you’re bound to find more than you bargain for – and we mean that in a good way – when you venture out past your own front door.

South Carolina native Paula Cooper Trajkovski (TRY-KOV-SKI)  decided to step out past her front door (the United States) to broaden her horizons.

Busily employed and working on a Master’s Degree, Paula wasn’t expecting to find love – especially not INTERRACIAL love. Instead, she says, “I found it all: I found love, work and fulfillment – in Macedonia!

She met her husband Bojan Trajkovski  (BOY-YUN TRY-KOV-SKI) in 2009 while working as a contractor in Baghdad Iraq.

Bojan is Macedonian (you’re gonna LOVE his accent!).

Paula and Bojan1

The two married in Dubrovnik, Croatia in July 2012.

WedCollage Arm Wrestling

Paula T Pregnant1Paula and Bojan now live in Skopje, Macedonia.

They are expecting a son this December (around the 13th).

WOOT!

Paula and her husband  chatted with The Swirl World Podcast Co-Host Adrienne London Leach and discussed how they met and married.

You can listen to the podcast on Sound Cloud by clicking here.

Paula is currently trying to launch a small online boutique where she hopes to use it within a year after her launch to help women in need.  She has also completed her 14-year duty in the Army Reserves May of 2014.

Paula and Bojan3Here in The Swirl World, we’re all about Black women living and loving well.

Right now, Paula is just soaking it all in.

She never thought that this is the path that life would lead her too, but it’s working out and she is enjoying the ride.

Gotta love it!

We Got Married The Same Weekend We Met!

October 23, 2014 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 4 Comments

TiaJosh1p

Do you love yourself, and are you comfortable in your own skin?

When it comes to relationships, do you know yourself well enough to know who you are and what you want in life?

Have you set boundaries and established your deal breakers and the terms you consider non-negotiable?

If this describes you, listen up.

If this doesn’t describe you, listen up anyway, because you’re going to hear some things that will help you in your quest to become the best you that you can be.

You know what happens when you meet someone who potentially seems like a great candidate for a life partner?

You vet, vet, and then vet some more.

And then, you make an educated decision – and you ACT.

That’s what Tia and Josh Delano did.

They met on Facebook, and –

Tia Delano shares the interesting story of how she and her husband Josh met (on Facebook) and married (the same weekend they met). This is what can happen when (1) You know yourself, (2) You know what you want/don’t want, and (3) You vet. Very. Well!

“My Parents Tried To Diss The Woman I Love!”

October 3, 2014 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 2 Comments

Karla and Don2

I must say I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with Karla and her husband Don, an interracially married military couple (Go Navy!).

Karla and Don at Karla’s promotion to Lieutenant Commander at Naval Space Command in Dahlgren, VA.

Karla and Don at Karla’s promotion to Lieutenant Commander at Naval Space Command in Dahlgren, VA.

They met and married while both were active duty Navy officers.

Karla and Don in their Dinner Dress Whites at a Dining Out in Hawaii hosted by Don’s squadron.

Karla and Don in their Dinner Dress Whites at a Dining Out in Hawaii hosted by Don’s squadron.

Karla is my friend on Facebook (and one of the few people I call “My sister from another Mother”).

She is well-known on interracial blogs, and always adds value and depth to any conversation.

Karla and Don are vibrant, active people who love life and love each other tremendously.

With 20+ years of marriage under their belt, they had so many pearls of sheer wisdom to share with our readers and listeners.

The conversation with them was chock full of golden nuggets, so we broke it into four parts (available on iTunes, Sound Cloud and Stitcher) :

Podcast Episode 032 – Life, Love and Marriage – In the Navy!

Podcast Episode 033 – How To Manage a Long Distance Marriage

Podcast Episode 034 – The 3 Key Ingredients Necessary for Attracting a Quality Mate

And last but certainly not least, Podcast Episode 035 – My Parents Tried To Diss The Woman I Love!

To every Black woman who has been told that a non-Black man won’t stand up for her, LISTEN UP:

That is a LIE.

Don’t believe it.

Don’t fall for the okey-doke.

Men who will stand up for you, defend you – and choose YOU over family and friends DO exist, and Don is living proof of that fact.

Listen as he shares his parents’ reaction to the news he and Karla were getting married.

Better yet, listen to his reaction.

You can listen to “My Parents Tried To Diss The Woman I Love!” on Sound Cloud.

It should go without saying that Karla and Don will definitely be back on the show.

Until then, listen and learn. Woot!
