#231| Concentrate

August 19, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 6 Comments

shareasimage_CONCENTRATE

Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.

~Buddha

I challenge you to take a few minutes to clear your mind.

I say “take a few minutes,” because for many of us, clearing our mind can take a little time.

Once your mind is cleared, focus.

After focusing, kick things up a notch, and concentrate.

If you mind tries to race ahead – or if it tries to reflect back – rein it in and think about now.

Concentrate.

Concentrate on the here and now, placing your mind, thoughts and energy squarely in the moment.

Join in the Fray: What happened when you moved from focusing to concentrating? How did you feel? What were your next steps?

The Swirl World Team is committed to sharing 365 days of inspiration in 2015. Our goal is to help you stay motivated and inspired by bringing you positive, uplifting images and corresponding thoughts.

We’d love to FEATURE YOU in one of our Inspiration Daily posts! If you’d like to be featured, please send a nice, clear photo to InspirationDaily@TheSwirlWorld.com.

#229| Here’s Looking At You!

August 17, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 2 Comments

shareasimageHeresLookingAtYou

I’d be hard pressed to find anyone over the age of 20 (OK, 30 for sure!) who hasn’t heard the classic line, “Here’s looking at you, kid.”

The line is from the classic movie Casablanca starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.

Though we’re not toasting in the same manner as Bogart, we’re still sending good cheer as the new week begins.

Whether you’re employed 9-to-5, an online entrepreneur, stay-at-home Mom or basking in retirement, here’s looking at you as you enjoy a solid week of wins.

#228| Take It Easy

August 16, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 1 Comment

shareasimageSunday

It’s the weekend, y’all.

Time to take it easy.

Some coffee or maybe some tea . . . . your go-to drink when you’re ready to relax.

Maybe curl up with a good book, or binge out on Netflix or Hulu if you’re into television.

Or better than that, take a good, long, nap.

Whatever you decide, just be sure to kick back and take it easy.

You deserve it.

#227| Magic Things

August 15, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 2 Comments

shareasimageIyona1x

Can you discern the sense of wonder and rapture little Iyona (pronounced eye-yon-ah) is experiencing in this photo?

W. B. Yeats says, “The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.”

Though I’m planning to catch up on work this weekend, my goal is to deliberately be on the lookout for magic things: the teasing expression on a friend’s face, the inquisitive tilt of the head of my neighbor’s cute little dog or the chatter of the birds taking advantage of my Mother’s feeder.

I don’t want my senses dulled by busyness or distractions.

I want to see.

I don’t want to miss the magic things.

How about you?

#226| One Feeling

August 14, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 14 Comments

I believe there’s a song or a saying entitled “Love Is A Many Splendid Thing.”

There are few sayings I can think of that are truer.

Two people + two hearts = one feeling: Love!

Jeff and Toni, today’s featured couple, met online. They married this year on July 7.

Say it with me: Woot!

#225| A Traveling State Of Mind

August 13, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimageBlackWomanInNature

When we began the practice of daily uploading blog posts during 2015, the concept of “Travel Thursdays” was instituted fairly quickly.

Travel Thursdays was inspired by an impromptu conversation I had with Interracial Dating Coach Lorraine Spencer, who at one point in her life packed up and moved to Alaska.

We were conversing prior to her guest appearance on the podcast, and she gave me my entire “Travel Thursday” life when making the declaration, “Black women need to travel!”

(If you want to listen to that episode, click here)

Most of us want to travel, yet for many, budgetary constraints pose a significant obstacle.

If you won’t be able travel abroad – or stateside – this year, don’t despair.

We can all still travel – even if we only travel across town, to a local park or lake.

Remember, “There is sanctuary in being alone with nature.”

If traveling isn’t possible as a state of being, make it a state of mind.

#224| Do It Anyway!

August 12, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 20 Comments

shareasimageDoItAnyway

The internet is aglow with images of tennis superstar Serena Williams, who currently graces the cover of New York Magazine.

To say her body is exquisite is an understatement; Serena has six-pack abs to die for.

Watch her play tennis, and you’ll shake your head in amazement at her athleticism.

What About The Rest Of Us?

Well, as for me, I cringe when I see what I call “my mushy middle.” I could certainly stand for a little less body fat and a lot more muscle.

I struggle with effective time management, and sometimes my gym time is sacrificed on the altar of blogging and podcasting time.

Le sigh.

I have my weeks of getting into the flow of carving out time for trips to Anytime Fitness; relentlessly pushing myself to get up and go; no excuses.

Something happens to throw me off my exercising game – let me correct that statement and take responsibility for my actions – I allow things to happen and thus throw me off my game.

Monday night was almost one such night, until I remembered the catch phrase and mantra of blogger Kawanda Lamb, a new friend I met at Podcast Movement 2015.

Her mantra?

Do It Anyway.

Kaywanda created these baby blue wristbands featuring the words #DoItAnyWay, and she gave me one when we met.

Monday night when I looked up from my laptop the clock read 9:15. Surely it was too late to go to the gym and be fresh the next day.

Of course I happened to be wearing the wristband darn it and my eyes fell on that hashtag.

#DoItAnyway

I got up, and I went.

And you know what? Once I pushed past the resistance and got in my car, I was fine. When I walked through the doors and got on the elliptical, I felt even better.

So, what’s the thing in your life you need to tell yourself, “Do it anyway?”

Go ahead and push past procrastination, push past negative self-talk, push past laziness – and do it anyway.

#223| What Are You Doing?

August 11, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimageBlackWomanDO

So, who are you?

What do you want to be?

More important, what are you doing?

Are you engaging in pursuits yielding lasting value – or are you frittering away your time?

Are you a dreamer – or a doer?

Remember:

The difference between who you are and who you want to be, is what you do.

Say What??! Everyday Statements Interracial Couples May Not Like

August 10, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 3 Comments

Williesha and Hubby

“Wait. I did zip up my pants, right? Is my hair sticking up?”

“Ugh. My hair’s always messed up. Maybe I can check without seeming obvious?” I glance down quickly at my pants and my husband’s while sweeping my hand across my head.

These thoughts zip through my mind after walking into a doctor’s office with my husband. I’m black. He’s white.

Other patients (mostly older folk) stare intently, even if we stare back with a “wanna-take-a-photo” look. Sometimes I consider crossing my eyes and sticking my tongue out, but unlike these onlookers, I maintain my Southern politeness and civility.

Living as an interracial couple in Alabama, my husband and I expect our lives to be…well, different.

We’ve seen and heard it all: uncomfortable questions about racial inequity, conversations about our friends and families. You name it, we’ve heard it and we shrug it off.

Well, most of the time.

 Say What??

While cuddling with him one day, I giggled to myself at the things we’ve heard over the past few years. Here are some common statements that sometimes make us think twice about that person’s intentions.

1) “Are y’all together?” Most of the time, this is a perfectly valid question. Maybe you didn’t see us arrive together at a hotel with luggage and endearing smiles. Naturally, we stand right next to each other at the counter and chat.

Sometimes I want to respond, “Why, no. Generally I maintain personal space, but in this case I made an exception. I mean, look how fine he is! Ooo, is that his credit card number?”

2) “Just get over it. It doesn’t matter what others think.”  I’d like to say “Let’s be honest. We’re human beings. I’d like to think I have titanium nerves and a perfect amount of self-esteem, but I don’t.”

There are times when others’ opinions and perceptions are important, or at least annoying. We aren’t emotionless androids. The constant staring, plus dismissive comments like these bug me. Everyday things like second-guessing where we travel together is a legitimate reason to roll my eyes and sigh.

3)” I just want ya’ll to know, ya’ll are always welcome here. This is what we heard from an employee at a fancy restaurant. He never made an effort to say this to anyone around us. They just got their glasses of water refilled. Did we find ourselves at the VIP table in the middle of the dining area?

I’m thinking, “Oh, so the couple next to us fanning themselves with massive stacks of cash aren’t welcome? Well, that’s too bad.”

4) “You live in the South? Oh, I’m sorry. You should move to (insert state here).” This is normally followed by, “Well, not everyone is racist in the South!” I’m a born-and-bred Southerner and have traveled far outside my home. I’m aware that both statements are true but woefully simplistic and stated by folks who hate hearing their state being portrayed in even the slightest negative light.

These moments will always make me smile, because the folks who say it are optimistic and empathetic. But sometimes, they do give us pause. Then we laugh about it, snuggle up and file it away as a special couple’s moment.
