#253| It’s Better To Stay At Home

September 10, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 5 Comments

shareasimageSMITH

If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home. –James Michener

I love to travel.

If you say, “Let’s g—,” I’m saying, “When?!” before you even get the sentence out of your mouth.

Though I’m big on advocating the advantages of traveling, even I can think of a time when it’s better to stay at home.

I agree with James Michener – if you’re going to go somewhere and reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home.

In other words, if you’re going to be negative, fearful, critical and insensitive, keep all of that to yourself and Just. Stay. At. Home.

And you know what? Michener’s sentiment holds true if you hold those kinds of feelings concerning people of a different ethnicity or culture than you.

We live in a global society, which means we’re all interconnected – whether we like it or not.

I love living in a global society – how about you?

Mental Illness Did NOT Stop Me!

September 8, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

MiaRayeSmith1In this podcast episode, New York-based Actor Mia Raye Smith dishes about acting career. She also discusses how she overcame personal challenges with mental health issues.

Guess what??

Mia is about to debut the World Premiere of her 1-woman show!

From the Broadway World website:

Mia’s solo show, I Am Hope, will have its World Premiere at the United Solo Theatre Festival on September 23rd. The play was developed in Matt Hovermen’s Go-Solo Workshop.

A shorter version of the play was produced at Emerging Artists New Work Series in the Fall of 2014. The production is directed by Mary Catherine Donnelly whose recent directing credits include Jay-Z & Me (Edinburgh Fringe, Amsterdam Fringe, 59E59).

Mia can be anybody she wants to be without a drink in her hand. Her soul is as old as Detroit’s Motown records. Mia was revving up to travel the world, until it became the size of her studio apartment. Can she overcome her biggest fear that grandpa can’t help her shake?

Get To The Show

Performances take place at Theatre Row/Studio Theatre, 410 West 42nd Street (between 9th & 10th Avenues), New York, NY 10036.

Subways: A/C/E to 42nd Street.

Show Date:

Wednesday, September 23rd @ 3:30 pm

Running time: 60 minutes

Mia is funny and vibrant, and Adrienne and me enjoyed her so much! I also “got in Mia’s business” to get the details on her Swirl relationship.

#247| What Else Do You Need?

September 4, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimageDanielAndNiki

Hmmm . . . I believe Einstein was onto something.

Now, feel free to substitute the words table, chair, fruit and violin for the things that make you happy and bring you joy.

For me, the table would be exchanged for a book and the fruit for some chocolate or ice cream, yet for the most part Einstein is pretty spot on.

For our featured couple, Daniel and Niki Jarzynika, it looks like a beautiful natural setting and each other’s company is the ticket.

How about you?

#246| A Fantastic Find

September 3, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimageTomAndAlida_Travel

When we think of a “fantastic find,” a fabulous pair of shoes or a gorgeous dress we found on a shopping expedition may come to mind.

A bibliophile thinks of a good book; a music fan covets an album or cd; a foodie drools over the perfect restaurant.

Whatever floats your boat, on this Travel Thursday we want you to consider Ed O’Brien’s assertion that it’s fantastic to be found in a foreign country – not only for the sake of travel, but also for the sake of helping others.

Today’s featured couple, Alida Wright Sharp and her husband Tom, formerly lived in Russia with their two sons. Alida and Tom now live in Belize as missionaries and volunteers for CDF Belize, an organization focused on assisting sexually exploited women and children.

To learn more about Alida and Tom’s life in Belize, click here.

#240| This Is How We Do It

August 28, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 7 Comments

shareasimageHowWeDoIt

“How do you guys do it?”

Those of us who date and marry interracially often hear this question.

Many people wonder how individuals of different ethnicities and cultures meet, become attracted to each other, date, marry and have children.

(or some variation of the above)

Some people believe interracial relationships are complicated, dangerous, not worth the time or trouble, undesirable  ____________________.

(fill in the blank)

For those of us who are undeterred by the seeming negatives, this is how we do it:

We simply view interracial relationships as an opportunity to expand our dating and marriage options.

We discover the similarities and common ground – the shared values and worldviews.

As we grow in our mutual discoveries, we include another key component:

We respect each others’ differences.

And in the grand scheme of things, isn’t that what we have to do to build a relationship with anyone?

Yeah, it really is that simple.

Join in the Fray: Interracial relationships: How do you “do it?”

#238| Sing A Song

August 26, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimageTeneiaAndBen

Ella Fitzgerald, iconic jazz singer extraordinaire and known as “The First Lady of Song,” once said, The only thing better than singing is more singing.

I couldn’t agree more!

Even if you can’t carry a tune and won’t sing for anyone or anything other than the soap in your shower, singing is great because doing so makes you feel good.

(I can carry a tune, but I can’t sing).

Don’t feel like singing?

I’m reminded of this line from a classic song written by Al McKay and Maurice White and sung by Earth, Wind & Fire:

When you feel down and out, sing a song

It’ll make your day, yeah, yeah.

If you want to hear some great singing, check out today’s podcast episode featuring Teneia Sanders-Eichelberger and her guitarist husband Ben Eichelberger.

That girl can sang!
