From The Mailbag: Can I Find Balance With An Independent Woman?

September 30, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 6 Comments

shareasimageBlackWomanWGlassesDaily we receive emails and Facebook in-boxes containing questions from our readers and fans.

We respond to many of them privately, post them on our Facebook page and in our private group.

Because we receive so many questions, Adrienne and I decided to re-institute our “From The Mailbag” feature.

Each week we’ll share a question and give you the opportunity to weigh in.

This week’s question comes from Chase, a Marine who is also a fan on our Facebook page:

I have friendships with gorgeous, intelligent, single black women. Some have asked my opinion and sometimes it’s a topic of general discussion about our single status. I express to my friends, speaking from my personal experience, some women give off (probably out of necessity) this extreme air of independence.

Most men want to feel needed and will pursue a woman who allows that need to be met. Some men will actually pursue a woman who is struggling because this allows him to be Prince Charming or her superhero.

I definitely do not advocate a woman relying so heavily on a man; I’m suggesting balance. Show him you need and want him, working together while pushing through it all and building a life for you and him. So, when his job takes him elsewhere, he knows you have the strength and independence to hold family and the relationship down.

This is what I think and wonder, deep inside. Can I find balance with an independent woman?

Thanks in advance,

Chase

#261| A Happiness Magnet

September 18, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 9 Comments

shareasimageOptimism

So how do you see the glass – half-empty, or half-full?

Your response to that very basic question makes a world of difference not only in your approach to life, but also to how people approach you.

Those who are optimistic at heart, reflecting an upbeat, positive outlook on life are magnets.

They are happiness magnets – not just receiving happiness in their own lives, but spreading happiness to those coming into their sphere.

I believe we “get what we give.” When you extend positive energy into the universe, what else can the universe give back to you, other than what you give out?

Today and in life, I encourage you to be a happiness magnet.

Stay positive – and watch good things and good people come your way!

Join in the Fray: Today, what are you going to do to be a happiness magnet?

#254| Ride The Wave!

September 11, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 3 Comments

shareasimageJohnAndWife

I challenge you not to only “ride the wave,” but to go one better.

Do as Thoreau says, and launch yourself on every wave.

To me, launching yourself means to first see the opportunity in any given moment, and then to leverage that opportunity.

The “opportunity” can be something as simple as seeing the beauty in a single flower (there’s something to be said for “stopping to smell the roses.”)

The opportunity can also be something as complex as paying attention when an idea flits through your mind, and stopping. Writing it down. Brainstorming.

Or, just doodling!

The point is not only to seize the moment, but also to enjoy it.

John and his wife love riding the wave – with each other!

Join in the Fray: What steps can you take to “launch yourself?”

#247| What Else Do You Need?

September 4, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimageDanielAndNiki

Hmmm . . . I believe Einstein was onto something.

Now, feel free to substitute the words table, chair, fruit and violin for the things that make you happy and bring you joy.

For me, the table would be exchanged for a book and the fruit for some chocolate or ice cream, yet for the most part Einstein is pretty spot on.

For our featured couple, Daniel and Niki Jarzynika, it looks like a beautiful natural setting and each other’s company is the ticket.

How about you?

#246| A Fantastic Find

September 3, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimageTomAndAlida_Travel

When we think of a “fantastic find,” a fabulous pair of shoes or a gorgeous dress we found on a shopping expedition may come to mind.

A bibliophile thinks of a good book; a music fan covets an album or cd; a foodie drools over the perfect restaurant.

Whatever floats your boat, on this Travel Thursday we want you to consider Ed O’Brien’s assertion that it’s fantastic to be found in a foreign country – not only for the sake of travel, but also for the sake of helping others.

Today’s featured couple, Alida Wright Sharp and her husband Tom, formerly lived in Russia with their two sons. Alida and Tom now live in Belize as missionaries and volunteers for CDF Belize, an organization focused on assisting sexually exploited women and children.
