Saluting The Longevity of BW-WM Interracial Marriages!

October 18, 2016 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

Longevity in Interracial Marriages

All hail the longevity of interracial relationships between Black Women and White Men!

A Sweet Spot Called Longevity

Research indicates BW/WM interracial relationships enjoy a sweet spot called longevity.

That’s right – when it comes to interracial marriages, BW/WM combinations last longer.

A Case In Point

We have many examples of friends of The Swirl World we can point to (our friends Karla and Don immediately come to mind).

So, in celebration of the longevity of marriage, we salute our featured couple, Bryan and April French.

“Happy Anniversary!”

October 15 marked Bryan and April’s 24th wedding anniversary.

April and Bryan have 3 sons who are just as gorgeous as they are:

April and Bryan’s beautiful 2-month old granddaughter is truly a living doll!

April’s Secret Sauce

I recently had an opportunity to chat with April about spending 24 years with the love of her life. She told me about the secret sauce making her marriage successful.

Enjoy!

It’s Time For Black Women To Think Differently!

June 18, 2016 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

Think Differently

Let’s face it: in respect to some specific aspects of life, we can each stand to think differently.

Sometimes, just sometimes, our viewpoints may be a little outdated . . . even antiquated.

And my goodness, when we get on the subject of meeting people, much less dating, a mental reset may be in order.

To Smile Or Not To Smile?

In this “Unscripted” podcast episode, Co-Host Adrienne London Leach addresses the question: “To smile, or not to smile?”

She covers some of the reactions she encountered from European men on a recent trip to Scotland and the UK.  Based on her observations and experiences, Adrienne provides 3 easy tips Black women can apply if they are interested in meeting more people men.

Adrienne also shares an incident she and her best friend Regina experienced when Regina decided to employ the 3 tips.

Listen up. – and then make a conscious decision to think differently.

Make a conscious decision to think differently.

Apply the 3 tips.

(In other words, act differently).

Meet more quality men.

Repeat!

Child Protection: A Novel of Deception

February 12, 2016 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

Child Protection: A Conversation With Author & Swirler Don Rice, Jr.

In this special Men’s Podcast edition, I’m chatting it up with Don Rice, Jr., author of Child Protection, a thrilling crime drama. Don is a Swirler, and discusses his previous interracial relationships and reveals why he loves Black women.

Child Protection: A Novel of Deception

More About Child Protection: A Novel Of Deception

All across America, families are under siege. Not just any family though; only the ones who are in no position to defend themselves. The ones who don’t have the money to hire attorneys and private investigators. And most of those families are losing.

Who or what are they under siege from? The very government agencies that are supposed to protect them, whose mandate is to serve them and provide assistance when needed. The welfare agencies.

But the worst of them are the ones that are supposed to protect the children. And they are in collusion with the police, prosecutors, and all manner of medical professionals. Even the media have jumped on this bandwagon.

In this novel, a small team of Federal agents is investigating incidents of fraud in child protection agencies. This includes false allegations of neglect and abuse as well as financial malfeasance.

While conducting their investigation, they become enmeshed in a series of actions that, at first glance, appear to conflict with their purpose: Instead of merely investigating, they find themselves working to help some of the people who are being victimized by the system. . .
I hope you enjoy this conversation with Swirler and Author Don Rice, Jr.!

Get Your Swirl On During The Holidays With These 3 Tips!

December 10, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimageIRCoupleDinner

All right, Ladies and Gentlemen, the holidays are in full swing!

So, you wanna get your Swirl on during the holidays?

Then check out the 3 easy tips I recently shared for those who want to get their swirl on during the holidays – and beyond.

The audio from this podcast was taken from a Periscope I did a couple of days before Thanksgiving.

(So, are you following me on Periscope yet? If not, what are you waiting for?)
shareasimagePeriscope

I refer to Thanksgiving in the audio, but these tips are good for Christmas, the upcoming presidential election season – basically, all year round.

I encourage you to implement 1, 2 or 3 of the tips. You’ll be getting your Swirl on in no time!

If you can’t see the podcast player, click here or here.

If you can’t see the Sound Cloud player, click here. You can also head over and listen to the show on iTunes, Stitcher Radio, Spreaker or PlayerFM.

Shout Out!

The Shout Out! for Podcast Episode 94 goes to the dynamic, ubiquitous powerhouse Michelle Y. Talbert of the Her Power Hustle website and podcast. Michelle also recently launched a new start-up: Her Power List!

According to the HPL website, “Her Power List is the ONLY women-led business directory that enables you to locate the goods and services that you seek.

With a simple click of your mouse, you can connect with the owner on your favorite social media platforms–from LinkedIn to Periscope, watch her share helpful information with you in a video, peruse a gallery of pictures, download resources (like a free chapter of her most recent book) and shoot her an email to ask a question.

For those HPL Listers who provide in-person service, you can map their location with our Google map function – straight from the HPL Listing!”

Michelle made The Swirl World a featured business during the first week of her launch, and we couldn’t be more honored.

We wish Michelle all the best in this new business venture – and we’re proud to call her friend.

Join in the Fray: Are you going to get your Swirl on during the holidays? If you use any of the tips, send me an email at aswirlgirl@theswirlworld.com. I’d love to feature you on the blog!

#344| She’s Going Places

December 10, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimageKaywandaLambGoingPlaces

It’s Travel Thursday, which means we love to see people going places.

But you know what?

“Going places” doesn’t necessarily refer to traveling.

Sometimes, “going places” means doing new things, branching out and leaving your comfort zone.

“Going places” can also refer to launching new websites and products (something The Swirl World plans to do in 2016).

“Going places” can also refer to the upward trajectory the life of today’s featured model, Kaywanda Lamb, is taking.

Kaywanda is launching her first book, entitled Do It Anyway: The Single Moms Guide to Living Life and Achieving Her Goals.

She’s living her dream and loving it.

In other words, she’s going places!

Join in the Fray: In what areas of your life are you “going places?”

Kaywanda_circlephoto-150x150Kaywanda Lamb is an author, blogger, speaker, and Single Mom Coach. She teaches single moms to “rock the life they got” using her motto #DoItAnyway coupled with her 4 Part system.

Her sons are her pride and joy.  Follow her @Kaydyma on Twitter and at KaywandaLamb.com for more inspiration and a free discovery session.

Note: The Swirl World receives no affiliate income from this post. We love Kaywanda and simply want to support her!

#294| Our Secret Sorrows

October 21, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 3 Comments

shareasimageSecretSorrows

“Every man has his secret sorrows which the world knows not; and often times we call a man cold when he is only sad.”

~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Certain posts often go viral on Facebook; making the rounds from individual to individual.

Many of the posts are silly practical jokes. We read, chuckle and blow them off.

However, some of these posts carry serious messages everyone should pay attention to.

This is one such post. (I don’t know who originated the words, so I can’t give them credit):

Many people think that a suicide attempt is a selfish move because the person just does not care about the people left behind. I can tell you that when a person gets to that point, they truly believe that their loved ones will be much better off with them gone. This is mental illness not selfishness. TRUTH: Depression is a terrible disease and seems relentless. A lot of us have been close to that edge, or dealt with family members in a crisis, and some have lost friends and loved ones.

Let’s look out for each other and stop sweeping mental illness under the rug. If I don’t see your name, I’ll understand. May I ask my family and friends wherever you might be, to kindly copy and paste this status for one hour to give a moment of support to all those who have family problems, health struggles, job issues, worries of any kind and just need to know that someone cares. Do it for all of us, for nobody is immune.

Hope to see this on the walls of all my family and friends just for moral support. I know some will!!! I did it for a friend and you can too. You have to copy and paste this one, no sharing. Thank you!

We usually address physical health on Wellness Wednesday, but today we want to focus on mental health.

So, How Are You?

How are you? Are you feeling all right?

From an emotional and mental standpoint, do you feel connected – and are you enjoying a good sense of well-being?

If you don’t, will you please pick up the phone and make a call or send a text and ask for help? Of if you prefer, will you please click your mouse – and send an email?

Meet My Friend Jackie

Jackie ONappyIf you feel like you need someone to talk to and don’t know who to contact, I’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline M. Dawson.

Jackie is a Substance Abuse & Mental Health Therapist/Coach with more than 16 years of experience. In addition to coaching, counseling and Consulting, she’s also a popular blogger and advice columnist.

Jackie (affectionately known as “Jackie O’Nappy” around the web) is well-connected in the mental health field. If she can’t personally help you because logistics, she promises to connect you to someone who can.

Enjoy Complete Wholeness

We want the members of Swirl Nation to enjoy complete wholeness – mind body, soul and spirit.

If you have secret sorrows, the first step to eradicating them is to pull them out of the shadows and stop keeping them a secret.

Help is only a mouse-click or an email away.

To connect with Jackie on Facebook, click here. To connect with Jackie via email, send an email to hello@jackieonappy.com.

Young, Gifted and Black: Meet Shelby Birch

October 12, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimageShelbyBirch2

Here in The Swirl World, our overarching mission is to provide the tools, inspiration and conversations to help Black women live their best life.

Today, I’m pleased as Punch to introduce you to a woman who is living her life to the fullest – and exemplifies being Young, Gifted and Black.

Meet Shelby Birch

“I have an obligation to tell my story for those who couldn’t do it themselves. I write for them.” -Shelby Birch.

Years ago, Shelby was depressed and complemented suicide.

Instead, she turned to writing and poetry and that has helped heal her. Now a Spoken Word Artist/Poet, Shelby wants to show the world that poetry can mend the broken.

Honors and Accolades

At 13, Shelby won 1st place in her middle school talent show. Since then, she has competed in local, national and international poetry slams as a youth poet and adult.
