“I’m Ready To Date Interracially!”

August 23, 2014 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

This is the excited, yet determined proclamation of Regina Parker, a Black Woman living and working in Virginia.

Regina the friend and co-worker of my partner in crime, Adrienne London Leach.

We had a BLAST laughing and talking – Regina is spunky, perky and fun.

Here’s what Regina has to say for herself:

I am Regina Parker and I’m ready to swirl! I am one of a kind. You might even say that I am extraordinarily sweet.

I am told that I watch way too much Ironman. Anyway, I am fun-loving and down-to-earth. I am physically fit and I enjoy traveling and socializing with family and friends.

I don’t take too kindly to negativity because I am genuinely a positive person.  I have never dated outside my race but getting to know someone new will be exciting (or I will go back to watching Ironman).

All I have known from my previous relationships are Black men.  I have changed my outlook because there are some decent non-Black men out there who know how to treat a Lady like the Queen she is supposed to be!

I am ready to swirl because I do not want to limit myself to being one-sided when there is more potential for romance from every side.

And there you have it. All Adrienne and I can say is, “You GO, Regina!”

And of course we’ll keep you informed on Regina’s progress. A woman who is this attractive will have NO problems swimming in a larger dating and marriage pool!

Pssst! If you want to say Hi to Regina, send her an email at rgallenp98@gmail.com.

You can listen to Regina’s episode on iTunes.

You can also listen on Sound Cloud.

August 12, 2014 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

We Scored Our First Celebrity Interview!

Just this week Adrienne and I had the honor and pleasure of interviewing actress and producer Garcelle Beauvais – yes, the Garcelle Beauvais:

and actor/producer/publisher Sebastian Jones, who is as brilliant as he is easy on the eyes.

And just in case you’re wondering, “Where have I seen him before?” Check this out:

Together, Garcelle and Seb are the authors of the “I Am Book Series,” and graciously consented to interview with us for the podcast.

The interview was done via four different telephones, so please overlook the sound quality.

It was a GREAT interview!

If you are receiving this in an email, you can listen to the episode on Sound Cloud or Stitcher Radio.

He Shoved An Oreo Cookie In My Mouth!

August 9, 2014 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

10441216_10152509470969187_7965351480029079568_nWe’ve been podcasting since June 9, and one of the things I’ve learned is this: Sometimes the best conversations take place before we record the show, or immediately after.

The Swirl World Podcast Men’s Editor Mark Custard and I were fortunate to enjoy an impromptu, “after the show” conversation with Alida Wright Sharp and Tom, her husband of 32 years.

Alida was featured on Podcast Episode 20. She told us how they met at age 15: “He shoved an Oreo® cookie in my mouth!”

Her husband Tom was in the room listening while Alida did the show, so we were able to snag him and get him to tell us what was going on in his 15-year old mind.

As hilarious as his explanation was, the conversation took a serious turn as we moved to a discussion of resistance to their interracial marriage by the clergy and family members alike.

Alida and Tom also shared instances of colorism experienced in Russia by their two sons – one blue-eyed, and the other brown-eyed.

Who could have known an impromptu conversation about Oreo® cookies could turn this deep??

You can listen to the episode on Sound Cloud:

A Black Woman In Russia And Belize

August 4, 2014 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 2 Comments

alida_lgOur good friend and mentor Lorraine Spencer knows the most interesting people. Not only is she extremely well-connected, she is what I call a Master Connector.

Lorraine is the bees knees when it comes to introducing and connecting people, and we have her to thank for introducing us to today’s guest: a Black woman who lived in Russia and now lives in Belize.

Men’s Podcast Editor Mark Custard and I had the pleasure of chatting up Alida Wright Sharp.

Alida, her husband Tom and their two boys formerly lived in Russia. She and Tom now live in Belize as missionaries and volunteers for CDF Belize, an organization focused on assisting sexually exploited women and children.

We conversed with Alida via Google Hangouts and had a blast. She describes what living in Russia was like and schooled us on life in Belize.

We were surprised to learn that Alida’s encounters with racism and disdain for her interracial marriage never happened overseas; instead, she and Tom experienced racism . . . . . in the States.

Alida extolls the virtues of Black women traveling and living abroad, talks about how she and her husband met (Oreo cookie, anyone?) and tells us about her new CD project.

I believe you’ll find her account extremely eye-opening.

Enjoy!

Black Women Need To Travel!

July 30, 2014 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

Lorraine SpencerOne of the delightful things about doing a podcast is that we often have the opportunity to engage in impromptu conversations on a wide variety of subjects.

In our previous podcast Lorraine Spencer, Interracial Blogging Pioneer, Dating Coach and self-described “Information Broker,” rejoined Adrienne and me to discuss her new book, When Family Does You Wrong.

I was asking Lorraine about her background, and during the course of her response this gem of a conversation came up.

Want to travel – or simply experience an adventure? Listen to Lorraine’s comments about the choices she made as a young woman (one of which was to pack everything up and move to Alaska), and why Black women need to travel.

I’m so happy my passport is current . . . .

Lorraine is the publisher of the blog Interracial Marriage and Family and posts articles on Beyond Black & White under the name “Swirl Queen.”

In addition to listening in iTunes, you can also listen to this episode on Sound Cloud.

When Family Does You Wrong

July 28, 2014 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

Lorraine SpencerHas a member of your family ever done you wrong?

I’m talking about wrong.

When the incident occurred, did other family members try to act like YOU were the problem?

Lorraine Spencer, Interracial Blogging Pioneer, Dating Coach and self-described “Information Broker,” rejoins Adrienne and me to discuss her new book, When Family Does You Wrong.

Lorraine shares the riveting story of how she and her family lost their home and possessions, and were forced to start over – all as the result of being deceived by a family member.

Lorraine is the publisher of the Swirling and Marriage blog and posts articles on Beyond Black & White under the name “Swirl Queen.”

We appreciate Lorraine’s willingness to be so transparent. Adrienne and I have both read the book and we highly recommend it.

You Know YOU’RE Cray Cray When . . . .

July 22, 2014 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 1 Comment

4SCdDBZIuTyqnFAc6n8kv4M4q87wAMUxqR024e2hb0gCray Cray – What can I say?

Here in The Swirl World, we just love, love, LOVE blogger and vlogger Mrs. Eugenia Berg of the blog/vlog “Married Girl In A Weird World.”

We love her wit, her charm, her wisdom and above all her PASSION for Black women.

When we interviewed her for Podcast Episode 003, we asked her to be on standby because we KNEW we wanted to have her on the show again.

You Know You’re Cray-Cray When . . . .

Whelp, when we went through a stretch of emails from readers telling us some of the “cray-cray” things they were doing (that’s right – they were doing some cray-cray things, y’all) we contacted her to join us in coming up with some dating actions and practices that identified people as sho ’nuff cray to the cray, cray, CRAY.

Eugenia was up for the task and made time to talk with us. We appreciate that – especially since she and her handsome hubby are now expecting TWINS! Woot Woot!)

Here’s a BONUS (see how much we love you?):

Want some FREE coaching on Vetting? Eugenia’s blog is a premiere source. You can find just about everything you need to know on the subject by watching her vlogs on the subject and clicking here and here.

Doing podcasts with Eugenia is always a blast. We know she’s going to be busy with twins Axel and Lionel, but we promise to have her on as often as they time permits!

Teaching Hair Love To Young Girls

July 21, 2014 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

SY8pRw91QkuVkgJQW_-OccKqkNyhky5J0bQs2IpqAmsIn this episode Adrienne and I interviewed the fun-filled Mechal Renée Roe, author of Happy Hair.

Raised in St. Louis by a single mother of three girls, Mechal has always been fascinated with art.

She often used the medium as a form of escape of an under-served community.

She has, fortunately, allowed these experiences to be a catalyst, rather than a hindrance, to all of her wildest dreams.

As an adult, Mechal used her experiences as a child from a mixed shade family to write and illustrate Happy Hair.

U349K4SNfz51GCULEQrpLC3EwKxtnG12ynWkJ5o2fqU

Happy Hair is a call and response picture book that promotes positive self-esteem and hair love to girls of all ages. Happy Hair covers different shades and hair types all while being fun and fashionable!

fc9PBbYvFJZgbCRHd9bvIm5mM8agA0E2GN4wXma2wCE

Her book is a celebration of the uniqueness of natural hair, and all of its styles.

This book is the foundation to building Happy Hair in young girls, thus enabling them to grow up into women who will fully embrace their unique beauty.

In addition to discussing her book, Mechal (pronounced “McCall”) discusses cutting off her locs, her new ‘do, hair care products and Black women’s beauty and uniqueness – all the ingredients for an interesting, stimulating and thought provoking conversation!

A White Man Who Loves Black Women

July 18, 2014 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 1 Comment

White Man Loves Black WomenSinger. Songwriter. Composer.

(and a Magician, too!)

Link A. Valiant holds all these titles, yet there is another title of which he is most proud: Swirler.

That’s right – Link Valiant loves Black women, and in this podcast episode he discusses the why and the how.

When Did He Know He Loves Black Women?

The Chicago native tells us he came to this realization between the ages of 18-19 and shares the events in his life that led to his discovery.

At the end of the show, Link even sings a few bars from a ballad that he wrote – a Black woman is his muse, of course!

You can also listen to the show on Sound Cloud.
