A Brown Girl In An Anime World

October 19, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

ShareanMart-print

Anime

noun an·i·me \ˈa-nə-ˌmā, ˈä-nē-\ : a style of animation that was created in Japan and that uses colorful images, strong characters, and stories that have a lot of action

Anime is taking the world by storm, and many of us find it fascinating.

I’m especially intrigued by women involved in anime and the involvement of Black women in particular.

Imagine my delight to discover and interview anime artist and comic-book creator Sharean Morishita of S.K.Y. Art & Design and the S-Morishita Studio.

Sharean chats about growing up as an awkward Black girl in a single-parent household, and how she found and makes her mark in the art world.

She also gives us the back story on her husband’s last name!

#288| No Fear

October 15, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 3 Comments

I have no fear of depths but a great fear of shallow living.

~Anais Nin

In our estimation, being untraveled (domestic or international) is but one form of “shallow living.”

We can’t stress enough the life changing value traveling brings to your life.

Thankfully, members of The Swirl World are sending in photos and sharing their travel stories. We’d love to share yours! Send your info and photos to InspirationDaily@TheSwirlWorld.com.

Today’s featured couple, Carl and Shelly, love seeing the sights of Shelly’s native Jamaica. Stay tuned for more from this duo!

#280| Change Your Mind

October 7, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 7 Comments

shareasimagePointOfView

To me, good health is more than just exercise and diet. It’s really a point of view and a mental attitude you have about yourself.

~Albert Schweitzer

We’ve all pretty much heard the sayings, “Mind over matter” and “you are what you think.”

Albert Schweitzer takes these thoughts a bit farther by sharing his belief that good health goes beyond diet and exercise.

Consider this: good health is contingent on your point of view coupled with your personal mental attitude.

Want to change your health? Change your mind!

#260| Go Hard!

September 17, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 5 Comments

shareasimageWillieshaandJThe Urban Dictionary defines go hard as “doing something to its fullest; doing something well.”

Based on that definition, what do you believe would happen if whatever we did, wherever we went, we did it with all our heart?

What if we didn’t do things or go places as a matter of routine, but in anticipation and expectation?

What if we willingly and wholeheartedly put ourselves into the things we do – into the places we go?

What if we immersed fully into the moment?

What if we decided to go hard – everyday?

#254| Ride The Wave!

September 11, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 3 Comments

shareasimageJohnAndWife

I challenge you not to only “ride the wave,” but to go one better.

Do as Thoreau says, and launch yourself on every wave.

To me, launching yourself means to first see the opportunity in any given moment, and then to leverage that opportunity.

The “opportunity” can be something as simple as seeing the beauty in a single flower (there’s something to be said for “stopping to smell the roses.”)

The opportunity can also be something as complex as paying attention when an idea flits through your mind, and stopping. Writing it down. Brainstorming.

Or, just doodling!

The point is not only to seize the moment, but also to enjoy it.

John and his wife love riding the wave – with each other!

#253| It’s Better To Stay At Home

September 10, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 5 Comments

shareasimageSMITH

If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home. –James Michener

I love to travel.

If you say, “Let’s g—,” I’m saying, “When?!” before you even get the sentence out of your mouth.

Though I’m big on advocating the advantages of traveling, even I can think of a time when it’s better to stay at home.

I agree with James Michener – if you’re going to go somewhere and reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home.

In other words, if you’re going to be negative, fearful, critical and insensitive, keep all of that to yourself and Just. Stay. At. Home.

And you know what? Michener’s sentiment holds true if you hold those kinds of feelings concerning people of a different ethnicity or culture than you.

We live in a global society, which means we’re all interconnected – whether we like it or not.

I love living in a global society – how about you?

#246| A Fantastic Find

September 3, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimageTomAndAlida_Travel

When we think of a “fantastic find,” a fabulous pair of shoes or a gorgeous dress we found on a shopping expedition may come to mind.

A bibliophile thinks of a good book; a music fan covets an album or cd; a foodie drools over the perfect restaurant.

Whatever floats your boat, on this Travel Thursday we want you to consider Ed O’Brien’s assertion that it’s fantastic to be found in a foreign country – not only for the sake of travel, but also for the sake of helping others.

Today’s featured couple, Alida Wright Sharp and her husband Tom, formerly lived in Russia with their two sons. Alida and Tom now live in Belize as missionaries and volunteers for CDF Belize, an organization focused on assisting sexually exploited women and children.
