It’s OK To Be Zany – Zany Is Good!

April 18, 2016 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

 Zany Is Good

zany – za-ne

adjective
  1. amusingly unconventional and idiosyncratic.
    “zany humor”

A former coworker and professional associate of mine died recently. Nick was not a close friend but was a good guy and a talented meteorologist.

His life was cut short in a tragic way – I’ll spare the details. But suffice to say there were rivers of tears at his memorial service. Several family members spoke, and you could tell that they were just shattered.

But there was also laughter. A fellow meteorologist and close friend of the deceased delivered a short eulogy, the theme of which that Nick was “the proper amount of zany.”

But what did that mean, exactly?

The Proper Amount Of Zany

As his friend recounted, “Nick and I and Scott (another friend) got into the habit of playing cribbage on Sunday afternoon at a picnic table on the Decatur, Georgia courthouse grounds. All the while, we’d talk about the ups and downs of life.”

“Nick became very passionate about cribbage. One day he told us he’d started a blog on the game, because he’d done some checking and as far as he could tell, none existed. And there just NEEDED to be a cribbage blog.”

The Off-Kilter Approach

That slightly off-kilter approach extended to his professional life as well.

Right after a significant earthquake in Japan, his coworkers were trying to get information from the Japanese meteorological and science agencies. The trouble was, in the very early going, everything on their websites was in Japanese.

Suddenly, said his workmate, an email popped up from Nick. He was supposed to be enjoying a day off, but here he was on the computer at home. (Mind you, this was very early in the morning.)

Unprompted by anyone, he’d translated the bulletins into English and was passing them along. That was how his colleagues learned of his ability to speak several languages.

When I worked with Nick in our radio department, our morning shifts started at 3:30 a.m. The rest of us would stumble in, groggy, attend a meteorologist briefing and then head upstairs. We’d flee into our radio booths and close the doors, starting our day hermit-like while quietly and desperately slugging coffee.

Not Nick. His coffee substitute was 90s alternative rock. You could hear it trickle out of the closed door of his booth.  Suddenly, it would momentarily blast full-volume as he’d open his door, run down the hall to ask if we needed help on a busy morning with answering a forecast question, or just simply grin and say “What’s up?”

Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Swirling

So how does this apply to life, liberty and the pursuit of swirling?

I think we all need to consider incorporating a little more zany into our lives, and I think that done right, it’s a real conversation-starter and people-attractor.

I’m not suggesting anyone take up cribbage, but I think it’s worth exploring some new activity as a way of giving oneself a mental jolt.

Maybe it’s time to take that finger-painting class. Or to decorate your work cubicle with Mardi Gras beads and Star Wars figurines. Or take some bacon-flavored cupcakes across the street to meet that new neighbor you’ve only waved to in passing. The possibilities are endless.

It’s OK To Be Zany

Zany is good. Zany is interesting. And you never know, you might meet someone that’s “half a bubble off plumb” (as my blue-collar friends used to say) in the exact same way you are.

#169| Too Much Fun

June 18, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimageTooMuchFun

At some point during each day I head over to this site to review the post(s).

I check to see how the photos turn out, think about how I should have made them larger or smaller and review the post.

Yesterday I gasped, and then giggled when I saw what I had done:

I’d put up a Travel Thursday post – and yesterday was Wednesday.

What Had Happened Was . . . .

See, what had happened was, I was excited about sharing the photo of the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai and eagerly prepared the post.

I was supposed to set that one to post for Thursday and post something else for Wednesday – well, you get the picture.

Making Mistak3s .. . .

I giggled when I saw yesterday’s post, and then laughed at myself because the snafu wasn’t the first one I’ve made since I began these daily posts.

I’ve gotten my count incorrect, and after making that mistake a few times between January and February, I went out and purchased a calendar that shows the number of the current day in the year, and how many days remain.

With that calendar in hand my mistakes became fewer – but I still made them.

Calendar_Blog

In the upper right hand corner, you see that today is the 169th day of the year and we have 196 remaining days in 2015. (I also have sorority meeting tonight at 6 p.m.)

What I Learned

I’m a perfectionist at heart, yet I’m so happy I’ve reached a point in my life that I can literally LAUGH at myself when things don’t turn out . . . . Perfectly.

Instead of being ticked, I’m tickled that not only do I make certain mistakes once, I’m prone to make them two, three, four times . . . or more.

I also learned that some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

Am I advocating sloppiness? Of course not. What I do advocate is the freedom to make mistakes, accepting the fact that mistakes happen – and realizing if they do, it’s ok, because there’s always tomorrow.

There’s always tomorrow, and we can never have too much fun.

#73| Conquer The World!

March 14, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimageShoes73M

So, what are you doing this weekend? Have any plans?

Maybe you’re an entrepreneur and you’re planning to get knee-deep into your “side hustle.”

Maybe you’re headed outdoors, to the mall, going to visit friends or treating yourself to an evening out.

Maybe you’ve worked hard all week, and you don’t even plan to get out of your pajamas all weekend long!

Well, if you do decide to go somewhere, make sure to dress with confidence. Don’t have a date? So what? You can be your own best company!

Put on that “I’m killing it” outfit, and for heaven’s sake, make sure your shoe game is tight.

Go on out there – and conquer the world.

#20 | The Power Of Confidence

January 20, 2015 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

shareasimageGynger20F

We can’t say enough about the power of confidence.

Confidence makes you comfortable in your own skin, ready for whatever – and whomever – comes your way.

When you’re confident, you run to life, not away from life.

Approach this week with confidence – and see how much fun you have!

The Best Way to Fly Solo

February 26, 2013 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 3 Comments

MASSAGE 2

Some of you may not know it, but I’m a licensed massage therapist.

(Pauses to listen to the sound of my personal stock going up; pats self on back).

I’m a licensed massage therapist and I have the great fortune to teach continuing education classes at the University of Louisiana. My class is called “Couples Massage for Fun and Relaxation.”

This past Thursday I had the pleasure of teaching my class. I had been informed a week prior by the class administrators that, per my approval, my class was going to have an odd number.

Hold up . . . an odd number of attendees???

That meant someone who signed up for the class was Flying Solo.

Flying Solo? In a Couples Massage class??? Who was this brave soul???

FLYING SOLO 2

Needless to say, I was intrigued. I gave my approval, and informed the class administrator that the Soloist just needed to agree to be my partner.

Fast forward to class night and, lo and behold, I didn’t just have one Soloist, I had two.

And both of them were men.

(Go ahead and faint from the shock. I’ll wait).

Yes, indeed. These two guys had signed up for the class, sans a female (or male) partner. They were taking a Couples Massage, and they were flying solo.

Turns out Jack and Robert* had decided that even though they weren’t currently attached, they wanted to be prepared for when they did have a significant other.

So, along with the six other couples in the class, Jack (the younger, very cute White dude) and Robert (the older, very handsome White dude) learned the five basic massage strokes and had a blast. They also enjoyed the pleasure of serving as the class guinea pigs – and treated to two hours of constant back, shoulder, neck, scalp, and face massages by Yours Truly.

The moral of the story?

The best way to fly solo is to go in, be fearless, and exceed your objectives!

Here’s how Jack and Robert accomplished it:

  • They refused to allow the “Couples” designation stop them from signing up
  • They refused to give in to the fear of the unknown
  •  They refused to be embarrassed by arriving solo
  • They focused on what they had (a desire to enhance their skills) instead of on what they didn’t have (a girlfriend)
  • They maintained a healthy, optimistic perspective on their future relationships
  • They took proactive steps to be prepared
  • They were determined to have fun

FLYING SOLO

Yes, I know that single women have been encouraged to venture out Solo. We’re encouraged to dine out alone, go to the movies alone, travel, etc. We’re told, Live your best life now! Don’t wait for a partner!

I cosign and practice all of that, and thankfully I enjoy my own company. What’s refreshing to me is the fact that Jack and Robert held such an optimistic view of their dating lives, and demonstrated fearlessness when it came to preparing.

And you know what? The other members of the class didn’t make fun of Jack and Rob – they applauded them. The husbands gave them knowing looks and shout outs of approval, and the ladies made sure to give them compliments and encouragement.

Jack (the younger guy) paid close attention to everything I said, to make sure he was doing everything correctly. Rob (the older guy) asked lots of questions and wanted to know all the variations of each of the strokes.

(Cough, cough. Anybody catch what I just said? Moving right along . . . . )

I’ve been talking about taking a Zydeco dancing class. I’m so inspired by Jack and Rob, I’ve decided to just do what they did: Sign up, partner or not.

I even mentioned my intentions in class, and guess what? Jack was already signed up – again, Flying Solo! He immediately offered to be my partner (tee hee hee!) and used his iPhone to look up the class on the spot.

Alas, Jack’s class was already full (darn it!).

But guess who asked for my number – and guess who’s signed up for the next one?

What I Want You to Do

December 25, 2012 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway 2 Comments

I want you to enjoy this thing we call the holidays.

Regardless of your form of celebration, please do get some rest. Spend some quality time with the people you love the most – and spend some quality time with you.

Enjoy your meal(s), and try to not over-indulge.  (I know, right? I did say try.) Since we had such a huge meal for Thanksgiving, the Christmas Dinner Planners (a committee consisting of my cousin Janelle, my aunt Doe, and me) decided to scale back on the offerings for Christmas dinner. This year we’re dining on Creole jambalaya, Southern fried chicken, green bean casserole. various salads, and multiple desserts.

I’m doing something special: I’m making Cajun crackers!

It’s too late for you to try them in time for Christmas (this photo is from Day 1), but here’s the recipe so you can have them with your New Year’s meal:

Recipe:

1 large pickle jar (or other wide-mouth jar. You can also use an extra-large Ziplock bag if you don’t have a jar).

1 box Saltine crackers

1 cup canola oil

1 package ranch dressing mix

2 heaping tablespoons red pepper flakes

Place the 4 packs of Saltines in the jar or Ziplock bag.

Mix the wet/dry ingredients together and stir well.

Pour the mixture over the crackers and seal the jar.

For the next three days, occasionally roll the jar (or carefully flip the Ziplock bag).

Open the jar on the third day and serve. These taste great plain, with cream cheese, or with pepper jelly.

Merry Christmas, people. Have fun today!

How to Be a Rock Star in 5 Easy Steps

November 9, 2012 By Michelle Matthews-Calloway Leave a Comment

So, you wanna be a Rock Star?

You don’t have to sing like the Beatles or rock out like Steven Tyler – all ya gotta do is learn the 5 basic massage strokes!

Last night I had the privilege of teaching a continuing education class entitled “Couple’s Massage for Fun & Relaxation.” In this class, couples learn the 5 foundation strokes of Swedish massage. I spent two hours filled with laughter (and some hilarious double entendres) as couples tried the strokes on each other.

They don’t lie on tables for this class. Instead, they straddle chairs and work on each other’s backs and necks. I even throw in some scalp and face massage for good measure, and each couple leaves with a “starter bottle” of massage oil.

These are the 5 basic strokes:

  1. Effleurage
  2. Petrissage
  3. Friction
  4. Vibration
  5. Tapotment

I won’t bore you with the gory details of what these terms mean. Instead, you can check out this video for a visual demonstration and some ideas:

Couples come away from the class with a decent introductory knowledge of how to use the 5 strokes to add a little fun, some relaxation, and a lot of spice to their relationship.

Mark my words, if you learn how to do these 5 steps and do them well, I can pretty much guarantee you that you’ll be a rock star.

What are you waiting for??? Get ta strokin’ – and rock it out!
