#103| You Lift Me Up

Many of us chat with our Besties on the regular, whether in person, by telephone call, texts or IM (or all of the above).

Sidebar: If you live close enough to your best friend to see him or her in person, you’re extremely fortunate and I’m jealous. I live in Louisiana and my best friend lives in Ohio.

Any who, Besties are good for lending a listening ear, shoulder to cry on, pint of ice cream, package of Oreos . . .

In other words, your Bestie lifts you up, and you return the favor.

The next time you speak to your best friend, be sure to let them know how much they mean to you and how much you appreciate them.

Jacque, you lift me up! Thanks so much for being you.

Kambrey and Kaelie are first cousins and best friends living in Lafayette, LA. Tammy, their Grandmother, calls them “Bayou Bébés.” We’ll be featuring more photos of Kam and Kae, so stay tuned.

Loving Black Women Is Not A Fetish – It’s A Preference!

A bit of time has passed since we presented an edition of Mondays With Mike, featuring our good friend and Team Member, Australian Michael Miocevich.

When we began corresponding with him on The Swirl World Facebook page, he told us,

“I am a white guy from Western Australia, and I have always been attracted to black girls/women. At my first school social I danced with a girl from South Africa, and I never forgot it, or her. I have met and dated a lot of girls, but I never fall as hard as I do for Black women.”

Mike started writing a column for us and became a member of our Team.Since then, he’s been busy – working and doing things like being on national Australian television to discuss interracial dating.

You go, Boi!

Mike slowed down enough to chat with our Men’s Editor Mark Custard for a special segment of The Swirl World Podcast – The Men’s Edition.

Mike doesn’t hold anything back as he talks about his love for and appreciation of Black women.

He says unabashedly that his love for Black women is not a fetish – it’s a PREFERENCE!

He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not…

Strolling Down Memory Lane

How many of us can remember playing this game as a child? It seemed so sweet at the time. Well, that’s if the last petal ended in “he loves me.” Some would take it at face value, while others would immediately search for another flower.

It was so common to play this game, back in the day. Older ladies would smile sweetly at a young girl, slowly picking off each petal. Perhaps it transported them back to their younger days, when they too wondered if their childhood crush loved them.

What a sweet stroll down memory lane! But how many of us still play this game today – desperately trying to figure out if the object of our affection loves us? The harsh reality is if you still have to play the game as an adult, chances are-he loves you not.

When A Man Loves A Woman

I know this is a hard pill to swallow. Everyone wants to know for sure they are loved. However, we should remember that when a man loves a woman, she will know it. My father walked 18 miles to see my mom. That’s love. Constant texts and calls, that’s love.

Love shouldn’t leave you in a state of wonder. Any man who does this to a woman does not love her. I repeat, if you have to question whether or not he loves you, he doesn’t. Don’t go searching for another flower. Don’t try to rationalize a missed phone call or text, as “oh, he’s just busy.” People make time to do what’s important to them.

Live And Learn

I found myself in the “he loves me, he loves me not” battle. Trust me when I say, it is a losing game. It will have you on an emotional roller coaster until you learn to accept the truth. If you are not given the time and attention you deserve, let it go. Pick up the pieces of your heart. Cry is you must, but move on.

If you focus on loving yourself that “loves me not” may turn into “he loves me.” If not, then at least you didn’t compromise your integrity or lower your standards, which isn’t easy if you’re a woman like me.

Having standards is well worth it. You’ll be able to look back at the situation and realize that even if he doesn’t love me, I love me; and that is enough.

Ah, here comes the sun!

Here in America, in those states observing Daylight Savings Time we’re going to be seeing more of the sun in the days and weeks ahead.

Unless you’re a vampire There’s something about sunrise that lifts the spirit and increases hope and optimism.

Keep looking up! Trouble – just like cloudy days – doesn’t last always.

But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. Malachi 4:2 NIV

#45| Amazing Grace

Have you taken the time to observe an older woman?

Older women have a certain level of dignity and grace that only comes with experience.

They possess a sense of knowing themselves; a confidence radiating from the understanding of who they are, what they want and don’t want.

They have reached the state of being clear about what they like and don’t like, and what they will and will not accept.

With this admirable level of wisdom also comes an admirable level of graciousness and patience; a willingness to teach and to lead.

What amazing grace, to desire to share with the generations of women who come behind them.

I’m learning all I can from the older women in my circle.

I want to pause today from featuring our Swirling Singles to give a birthday shout out to one of the most inspirational women I know:

Happy Birthday, Karla!

Have you ever met someone who, when you’re asked to give your thoughts concerning them, one of the most robust descriptions you can give of them is:

Simply Inspirational!

Karla is warm, witty, and funny, and one of the most brilliant you would ever have the pleasure of meeting. She speaks from a place that is rooted in experience, truth and love – and she gives it straight, no chaser.

Karla is fairly active on interracial dating and marriage blogs and the wisdom and down home common sense in her posts will have you nodding your head in assent.

She’s a retired Navy officer who served her country well, and served – and yet does – as a shining role model for other women to follow.

I can’t say enough about her, and I’m honored and proud to call her Friend.

Karla, Happy Birthday. Thank you for being you, and thank you for selflessly serving as a source of inspiration and encouragement to me and countless others.
